Centuries ago, Garmok the Chainbearer ventured into the Mere of Dead Men to free prisoners—half-drakes and hybrids chained by infernal magic. When he shattered their chains, an infernal rift opened, threatening to allow devils to invade the Material Plane. Garmok threw his flail into the maw of the rift and was pulled in with it, sealing the breach at the cost of his own life.

For generations after, the fen remembered Garmok's sacrifice, and travelers reported hearing "the clang of steel deep beneath the muck" on still nights.
