Prophecy of the Thorn-Born Star

The Prophecy of the Thorn-Born Star is an ancient fey prophecy received by the pixie queen Thalinyel in the Moonweaver Glade and later transcribed by elven seers. It foretells the rise of Tiamat — "five heads rising from the shadow's root" — and the waking of a "child of thorn and flame" who will turn the tide against her. The party knows the full text: Vaartox the Red recited the first two stanzas in Session 38 when he revealed that Keyleth is the Thorn-Born Star, and in Session 53 the Arcane Brotherhood delivered a third, final stanza the party — and, likely, the Cult of the Dragon — had never seen.

The Prophecy

Origin

Long ago, deep in the Moonweaver Glade, the pixie queen Thalinyel received a vision — etched in falling starlight, mirrored in a still pool. It spoke not in words, but in music and wind and bloom. Elven seers later set it down in the verses above.

The Vault of Arklem Greeth

The fuller manuscript comes from a sealed vault of Arklem Greeth — the lich-archmage who ruled the Host Tower of the Arcane before the Arcane Brotherhood overthrew him. Paranoid about anything that hinted at his own overthrow, Greeth collected every prophecy with the shape of an overthrow in it — and his copy of this one carries the final stanza. It was the line "her arrows pierce what gods have dreamed" that drew his interest: he and other scholars argued over whether the prophesied child can kill any god, or a single god — a question they never settled, and one reason the Brotherhood takes the text seriously now.

Interpretation

• "Five heads rise from shadow's root" – Tiamat, the five-headed dragon goddess, whose return is being cultivated from a hidden seed rather than simply summoned.
• "Fire devours the gates of fate" – unresolved; possibly the summoning itself, or the call of the Draakhorn.
• "Child of thorn and flame" – Keyleth, who survived the burning of Narthalas.
• "Guided by swarm, her truth unseen" – Keyleth's pixie swarm.
• "Her arrows pierce what gods have dreamed" – Keyleth's arrows against Tiamat's dreamed-of return; scholars dispute whether this power reaches one god or any god.
• "From grove forgotten, soul reborn" – Narthalas, the destroyed Glimmerwood village.
• "She turns the tide with forest's thorn" – Keyleth is the turning point, not the sole savior — the keystone in a larger fate.
• "The tide once turned, a debt comes due — the star that turned it, setting too" (new, S53) – once the prophesied deed is done, the Star sets. The Brotherhood's researchers cannot resolve whether "setting" means death or transformation. Keyleth's position: "I'm going to go with the transformation." The table's: "unsettling at the end there."

Why Narthalas Burned

The prophecy is the reason the Cult of the Dragon destroyed Keyleth's home. When word of the prophecy reached Tiamat's agents, the Ashen Covenant — five chromatic dragons sworn to the Cult — were sent to pre-emptively destroy threats to Tiamat's summoning. Vaartox the Red torched Narthalas to erase the Thorn-Born Star before her name "was ever sung." He believed he had succeeded. He was wrong, and in Session 38 he died for it.

The pattern is wider than Narthalas. The Harpers' archives (The Grove Burnings, delivered S53) now connect the attack on Starspire Grove — Xanphina's ancestors — and the burning of Narthalas to six further attacks across the centuries on fey-touched, prophecy-keeping sites, every file ending no known survivors. The Harpers are re-investigating each site.

A Warning: the Research Can Be Heard

Delivered by Maccath the Crimson alongside the stanza : inquiry into this prophecy resonates through the world — it is the kind of search that divination magic can detect if an interested party is listening. It is now possible that the Cult of the Dragon knows the party is looking into the Thorn-Born Star. The party must be extremely careful. Keyleth's identity as the Star remains not generally known — though anyone who hears her asking questions may draw the conclusion.

The Party's Trail

• Session 38 — Vaartox revealed the first two stanzas, the Ashen Covenant, and Keyleth's identity as the Thorn-Born Star.
• Session 48 — Keyleth asked Maccath the Crimson about the prophecy; Maccath found it vaguely familiar and agreed to research it.
• Session 51 — the research was formally handed to Maccath alongside the Council updates.
• Session 52 — Maccath revealed that the Arcane Brotherhood held the text of the prophecy all along and never knew what it referred to.
• Session 53 — the Brotherhood traced its copy to Arklem Greeth's sealed vault and delivered the third stanza (via the Harpers into Gootcha's intelligence book); the Harpers delivered The Grove Burnings; Maccath warned that the research itself may now be visible to the Cult.

Status

Active. The Arcane Brotherhood continues to research the prophecy's provenance, the any-god-or-one-god question, and the meaning of the Star's "setting." The Harpers are re-investigating the eight Grove Burnings sites for surviving witnesses; findings arrive in Gootcha's Harper book. The research is presumed compromised — interested parties may be listening.
