Initially prepared to fight, Thurmin instead opted to share a drink with the Spectator, and the two bonded over ancient duty and beer. In gratitude (or confusion), the Spectator allowed Thurmin to dip a shield into the **Sacred Green Flame**, granting it a +1 enchantment. The guardian, content to keep “doing its job,” waved them onward.

The heroes then confronted a group of bugbears under the supervision of the drow **Vahlek**, one of Nezznar the Black Spider’s lieutenants. When negotiations failed, Vahlek fled to warn his master. Moments later, Nezznar revealed himself — or rather, didn’t, as he turned invisible and sicced his pet spiders on the intruders. Also present was a battered dwarf who claimed to be Nundren Rockseeker.

The ensuing battle was swift and decisive. Nezznar, the would-be spider lord of Phandelver, fell before he could unleash his true potential. His ambitions died with him — and the drow’s grand web unraveled.

In the aftermath, “Nundren” revealed himself to be a **Doppelganger** — the brother of Verhys, the shapeshifter Shade had previously killed (and maybe flirted with). Vengeance was swift, if short-lived. Verhys struck first but fell soon after. On Nezznar’s corpse, the party found a key leading to a nearby locked chamber — and the real Nundren Rockseeker within.

Now the heroes hold the knowledge of the Forge’s location and the allegiance of its lonely guardian. But history is written in blood beneath these caverns — and as the saying goes, *mo’ caverns = mo’ problems*. Every dwarf, wizard, and orc who’s ever come here has ended up dead. Surely this group will fare better. Probably.

<details><summary>🧩 DM Notes (Spoilers)</summary>

Truth: The Forge of Spells remains functional, though unstable. Nezznar’s meddling weakened its containment, allowing residual draconic energy to seep into the ley lines connecting the Sword Coast. This will later draw the attention of the Cult of the Dragon in Rise of Tiamat.

Foreshadowing:
* The Spectator may act as a recurring NPC — lonely, loyal, and still “guarding” the Forge.
* The Forge’s energy links Phandalin’s history to the greater draconic upheaval soon to come.
* Nezznar’s death may not be the end; his correspondence could implicate deeper cult networks operating out of Neverwinter and Waterdeep.

Session 12 – The Forge and the False

Date: 1/6/2023 DM: Lauren

Summary

At long last, the heroes uncovered the heart of Wave Echo Cave — and with it, the ancient power that so many had died to claim. But the road to the Forge of Spells was anything but simple.

Braving the ominous energy behind the silent door, the party met a strange and chatty guardian: a **Spectator**, a floating orb of eyes and telepathic sarcasm, who believed it was still on shift guarding the Forge. It hadn't seen its boss, the
