* '''Damage is a legal target — official.''' The DM has ruled that the Tempered Soul die '''may be added to damage''', not just to d20 tests: "It's a less useful usage so I don't see a problem with it." This supersedes the "mechanically anomalous / flagged for the DM" notes on [[Keyleth]]'s S52 spend #7 (Worm Reaver damage vs. Vex) and her S53 wyrmling-kill spend — both stand as rules-clean.
* '''One-creature save-DC rule''' (made at the table, S53): a save-DC boost applies to only one creature of a multi-target spell. Recorded in the S53 block above and on [[Tempered Soul]].

Tempered Soul Usage Log

A running record of every time a member of Deez Nuts spends Tempered Soul. The feat was granted to the whole party when they signed the Compact in Session 50, so the log begins there.

Why we track this: Tempered Soul is meant to be narrated, not just rolled. Per the DM's rule (S50): each use, the player tells the table what they are feeling, what they are using it to empower, and how they envision that power coming about. Logging all three — with a verbatim quote — keeps a record of how each character calls on it.

This log is also load-bearing. In S52 the DM used the accumulated record to decide who had "used your tempered soul enough times in a single domain" to crystallize an Aspect. What you log is what your soul becomes.

How to log a use

For every spend, add a row to that character's table below:

  • Session it happened in.
  • Empowered — the exact roll or effect, with the math: base roll + die(result) = total. (An attack, a save, a save DC raised, a check, a harvest roll.)
  • Feeling & how they described it — the emotion, memory, or instinct, quoted verbatim.
  • Outcome — did the soul die change the result?

The Aspects awaken (Session 52, 2026-07-12)

S52 is the session the system evolved. On the first night of the march out of Luskan, two characters woke from visions and the feat became Tempered Soul Aspects.

The crystallizations:

  • Shade — "Arcane Certainty" (domain: empowering arcane energy). Her visions were "of this sort of new, powerful, arcane power that you have… visions of, uh, throwing fireballs and chromatic orbs, and just the power of the destruction that you're able to wield."
  • Baelgrum — "Protection and Healing" (the transcript garbles his name as "Bill Graham"). His visions: "You were recalling how you would… been sort of the shield for the party, um, taking on damage so that they didn't, uh, being able to heal people or, uh, help and bless people, uh, with your power."
  • Gootcha crystallized mid-combat later the same session (see her use #3) — the DM ruled the spend itself tipped her over: "use of your… Tempered Soul is going to bump you into your aspect."
  • All six were bumped by session end. DM, in the wrap-up: "I'm pretty sure that everyone will have gotten bumped up today, so I'll, uh, finalize the drop-down selections for everyone else." Domains for Keyleth, Xanphina and Karma were not named on-mic — Keyleth's is being steered toward nature and survival (DM, mid-session: "since survival and nature is kind of your thing… if you want to use your tempered soul on it, it helps to develop your aspect in nature and survival").

The mechanics, as the DM stated them at the table:

  • In your Aspect's domain you may roll a d6 instead of a d4. The d4 remains available for anything, including in-domain if you want to spend less.
  • Charges replace once-per-day. Your pool is the sum of your dice — base d4 + one d6 Aspect = 10 charges. "Rolling a D4 uses 4 charges, rolling a D6 uses 6 charges."
  • Recovery: "you get all of them back on a long rest, and you get half of them back on a short rest" — true for everyone, Aspect or not ("if you have a D4, you can short rest, you'll get two of them back").
  • Growth: "it will scale up from a D6 to a D8, D10, D12, D20… if you keep working within an aspect." Spreading across multiple Aspects makes any one of them harder to push to d20 — "do you want to focus in one area, or do you want to branch it out so that you have broader domains?" Only one Aspect each for now.

Other rulings from S52:

  • Any d20 roll qualifies: "any D20 roll is an option to use your Tempered Soul if you want to."
  • It can be applied retroactively to a check already rolled — the DM offered it on "past checks" during the travel montage, and offered it to Gootcha after calling her attack a miss.
  • It can raise a save DC you impose on others, not just your own rolls (Xanphina's Restraining Ward, Baelgrum's Command, Karma's Cone of Cold).
  • Timing: you may spend it after you know what you're facing. "I feel like you can use it after you know what's happening, because the whole point is, like, you know whether or not you need to go bigger."
  • Camping overnight is a long rest and fully resets the pool (asked by Baelgrum, confirmed by the DM).

Prelude — the return strikes (Session 50)

Before the feat was formally granted, each soul returning from the Hells imbued one action with more power than they had ever managed — the DM had each player roll a d4, add it, and describe what they felt. These six simultaneous strikes killed Arauthator (89 damage, all at once). They are the feat's origin and are logged here for the record.

Character Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
Keyleth Longbow shot (the first strike; Hunter's Mark re-cast) — 16 + d4(2) = 18 Infernal rage: "Well, some infernal rage I felt, I believe. Anger. And, pixies were all fired up. They're more swarm and bug-like. And so I channeled a lot of that, the rage into it, and drew back my bow, and… let loose." Hit — and time itself slowed after her arrow, letting the others strike as one
Xanphina Returning Trident throw — 17 + d4 Rage at the whole ordeal: "Obviously, rage. Rage at… how long and hard I already have been fighting him. And having gone literally to hell and back. And still being here fighting him… I felt it as I threw my trident, and I just put all of it into the throw." Hit
Baelgrum Guiding Bolt (his first act with the party — "Dragonfight! I think I like you people already.") Cold rage / revenge: "Anger. A need for revenge… [a dragon] actually burned my brother to death in a grain store as he was trying to protect our village. So… the past 3 years has been sort of a revenge tour on dragons and cultists. It's cold rage." Hit
Karma Blight — d4(1) added to the Constitution save DC (first-ever save-DC use) Total conviction: "Pure confidence. I have never felt so confident that this will strike true in my entire life." Dragon failed; Blight burned deep
Shade Chromatic Orb (4th level) — 24 to hit + d4 Power: "I'm feeling super fucking smart. And… powerful. And so I'm just, like, putting all my power into it." Hit
Gootcha Silence — 20-ft sphere over the dragon, d4 rolled into the effect The Raven Queen: "I am feeling annoyed. And I am also feeling the Raven Queen through me. Tell[ing] me to silence him. And end him." The kill landed in eerie, total silence

# Session Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
1 S50 Attack — last charge of his Orb of Dragon's Breath (fire) vs. the Hydra Revulsion → protectiveness: "I'm feeling revulsion seeing this monstrosity on my friggin' boat. And I am channeling this energy to protect my new friends." +3 → hit (24); 23 damage, Hydra down to two heads
2 S50 Save DC — raised the Wisdom save DC of his 4th-level Spirit Guardians vs. the Dragon Turtle to 19 Confidence + protectiveness + awe: "I'm feeling… Confidence? … want to sort of protect these [good] people. I'm also feeling bewilderment at all the shit I've seen in… the one day I've been with this group. It's a [mixed] bag, for sure." Turtle rolled a natural 1, failed the DC 19; 19 radiant + speed halved
3 S51 Wisdom save (DC 15) — volunteering to open Halvard's bolted chest of 3,000 red coins Duty to strangers: "Disbelief at… how my abilities are turning out today… while I was not involved in this particular escapade to start this, I am feeling like it is necessary for us to try and help these people out." 12 + d4(4) = 16 — the d4 was the whole margin; avoided the curse's failed-save rider (it can command him to move or cast)
4 S51 Spell attack — touching the hostile dockmaster Bargus with Remove Curse (had already hit; spent it anyway; second spend without a long rest between, allowed at the table) Responsibility / setting things right: "We're pretty far into this at this point. I'm feeling a sense of responsibility to try and help this guy out. Considering we were… in a roundabout way, the cause of this. So yeah, responsibility, trying to set things right." 28 → 31; the curse "washes through him very powerfully" — Bargus uniquely kept his memories of the coins calling to him
5 S52 (2026-07-12) Persuasion check (with advantage, from Keyleth's Insight) — getting the burned-out villagers of the razed farmstead to open up about the red dragon and the cultists. Deliberately chose the d4 over his new d6 — persuasion is outside his protection/healing domain: "The four banger, I think. It's pretty **** good anyway, but I'm going to use it anyway." (base roll and die result not read out) Personal grief: "I'm pretty torn up about this one, right? So where I'm from, this exact thing happened. This is how I lost… Chunk of my family, this is why I'm doing what I'm doing, so this is particularly personal." Success. The villagers "open up a little bit more, because they… they see that you may actually be able to help. You're not just random travelers." This is the roll that cracked the cult's method — one villager reveals the cultists "just have orders to hit specific areas and they're just working through their list… collecting more and more gold and treasure, uh, for their dragon god."
6 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the 8-day march from Baldur's Gate to Elturel along the River Chionthar. 14 + d4(1) = 15. (He has −1 Survival: "I have a negative one on survival. This is not a good stat," and also took Keyleth's Guidance) — none narrated (purely mechanical): "Another one on the D4, sick." (sarcastic — a 1) Travel resolved as uneventful
7 S52 (2026-07-12) Save DC — his first Aspect (d6) use, and the first in campaign history. Raised the spell save DC of a 4th-level Command ("Halt") targeting three enemies at once — Garrick, Vex and Keith. Base DC 17 + d6(4) = DC 21 ("17, 18, 19, 20, 21. It's a 21 whiz save."). Declared explicitly as "Tempur-Sul aspect" — squarely in his protection domain Protecting the party: "thought around this. I'm… attempting to slow some of these fools down from swinging on my friends." Devastating. DM: "Jesus." — then rolled all three Wisdom saves and all three failed: "Alright, so they are all commanded to halt." Garrick, Vex and Keith each lost their turn (no move, action or bonus action). The single most load-bearing spend of the ambush.

Keyleth

# Session Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
1 S50 Attack — longbow reaction shot (Captain Larusta's command) vs. the Hydra (No clear inspiration named) fear/anger: "I can't think of an inspiration right now. Other than fear, I'm very upset about the dead people up front, angry, as usual… I'm gonna go ahead and add that on there and get it used." Hit; 12 damage + 4 Hunter's Mark — helped take out one of the last two heads
2 S50 Harvesting roll — Dragon Turtle carcass (d4 = 1) Vengeful & righteous: "as I start harvesting the corpse… I find myself relishing it more than I probably would have in the past. Feeling vengeful and righteous." Result deferred
3 S51 Wisdom save — retconned at session end onto the psychic pulse from the first coin-melt at the Half Moon Street forge Ancestral guidance: "Channel the wisdom of my elders, and looking to them for guidance. Feeling pretty confident in that role." (DM: "you added that to harden your heart and your mind… protecting your mind.") Shielded her mind from the infernal pulse
4 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — day 3 of the Luskan → Neverwinter march (base roll and die result not read out). An in-domain spend: the DM had just called her out by name to build toward a nature/survival Aspect Teenage angst: "Yes, I too am channeling every bit of frustration. It has been for me, my survival has not been as easy every day. So I'm very frustrated and feel like I'm lacking as… as a ranger. So a lot of angst, teenage angst almost." Day passed uneventfully; the party reached the halfway point
5 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the night's camp (night 3 → 4). 25 + d4(1) = 26 — the highest of the party Anger for the villagers: "I'll use mine as well. And it's more of anger and frustration at what the villagers went through." / "Sometimes I can also relate." Carried the group; party average 16.3 → an excellent night's rest
6 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the Baldur's Gate → Elturel march. 18 + d4(2) = 20. She also cast Guidance on Baelgrum for the same check — none narrated (purely mechanical) Travel uneventful
7 S52 (2026-07-12) Damage — after already hitting Vex with a 27 (Zephyr Strike / Worm Reaver; 14 + 7 from the extra 1d8), she invoked her 1d4 and added "Whopping two more." Mechanically anomalous — the feat adds to a d20 test, not to damage, and the attack had already resolved as a hit. The DM did not object, so it stands as spent Indignant fury: "because I'm very angry, how dare he get all up in my business and lay hand upon me or hammer in this case. So that's going to get my 1d4." +2 damage. Vex left "still standing, but barely" after her follow-up shot and Hellfire Pixie damage. Flagged for the DM — worth a ruling on whether damage is a legal target for the die

Shade

# Session Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
1 S50 Attack — Chromatic Orb (fire) vs. the Hydra Pure confidence: "what I'm feeling is just, like, pure confidence." Hit (32); 40 fire damage — killed the Hydra
2 S50 Attack — 3rd-level Chromatic Orb (acid) vs. the Dragon Turtle, rolled "just in case I miss" Bloodlust + confidence + anger: "the feelings that I have right now are, like, bloodlust and confidence… all my new power has been wonderful. And I'm really mad, because I also got some of his steam." Hit (24); 30 acid damage
3 S51 Wisdom save (DC 20) — the infernal pulse of 2,400 coins melting inside the Host Tower vault Confidence, and pyromania: "I too am feeling confident that we can do this. And I like fire." Took 2 psychic (halved from 4); steeled "through confidence, resolve, and just an absolute love of fire"
4 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the night's camp (night 3 → 4). 10 + d4(1) = 11 Restless anticipation: "[I] will be using mine as well. And I'm feeling… anxious for a fight, but, like, in a good way. But also… Know that we have stuff to do." A wasted spend — she slept badly anyway. Baelgrum, next morning, to the Bronze Blades: "Don't mind Shady. She didn't sleep very well last night." Shade: "I didn't."
5 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the Baldur's Gate → Elturel march. 4 + d4(3) = 7 (a terrible base roll) Weariness: "I will be using my [Tempered Soul]… Because I'm feeling… Ambitious but tired." Travel still resolved as an easy trip
6 S52 (2026-07-12) Wisdom save (DC 14) vs. Rook's shadow-wreathed magical arrow — failure would have blinded her. 13 + (3) = 16. Her 13 would have failed by one. (Die not named aloud; she checked her pool first — "I think I have enough left in my bank" — and the DM confirmed she was at all 10 charges after the long rest) — no feeling narrated by the player; the DM supplied it: "the shadows start to roll around you and cover you, but you use your arcane power and push them aside and they dissipate doing nothing." The whole table egged her on (Keyleth: "Be tempered.") The die was the entire margin. DM: "if you had not passed this one… you would have been blinded, unable to, you know, target anything that requires line of sight, like a lot of spells do." She immediately Hellish Rebuked Rook (4th level) in return

Gootcha

# Session Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
1 S50 Long-rest Constitution save / Survival check (DC 18) Longing for rest: "My intention is that I need rest, and I'm looking forward to sweet dreams." Not individually resolved on-screen
2 S50 Hex — d4 (rolled 1) applied to the Dragon Turtle's Dexterity saves while hexed (DM ruling: disadvantage −1) Memory of the slain dragon: "As I'm hexing him, I am thinking of a memory of the dragon… that we just killed." The turtle failed every Dexterity save for the rest of the fight — javelin of lightning, Erupting Earth, and the wolves all landed full
3 S51 Sleight of Hand — mid-attempt reroll pickpocketing a Kurth bridge guard (with Baelgrum's Guidance) Her old self: "I'm feeling like I am out of practice… I'm feeling my past and how good I used to be at this. Feeling like I got this." Success — 20 gold (18 of them red coins, the discovery that cracked the whole mystery) plus a gold ring with a blue gemstone
4 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — day 3 of the Luskan → Neverwinter march (base roll and die result not read out) Frustration: "I'm also going to use my Tempered Soul because… I'm feeling frustrated that, um, every other day was so easy. Why is today so hard?" Day passed uneventfully
5 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the Baldur's Gate → Elturel march. 18 + d4(2) = 20 — none narrated (purely mechanical) Travel uneventful
6 S52 (2026-07-12) Attack roll — and her Aspect crystallized on this spend. Sneak-attack shortbow shot at Vex, opening the road ambush. 14 to hit — a miss (DM: "I don't think that is going to hit"), so he offered her the feat. 14 + d4(3) = 17, and then the DM ruled the use itself tipped her into her Aspect and retroactively upgraded the die: "Tempered Soul is going to bump you into your aspect… I'm gonna treat it like a D6, where I'm just gonna, you know, bump up that extra 2."19 Remembering who she is: "I am… remembering what a badass I am, and being like, yeah, it's been a while, but you got this." Turned a miss into a hit — and revealed the ambush's hidden piece. The arrow struck Rook, an invisible Tabaxi standing in the line of fire; sneak attack for 15, popping her invisibility. Gootcha stayed hidden (Rook failed to spot her)

Xanphina

# Session Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
1 S50 Long-rest Constitution save / Survival check (DC 18) — no emotion narrated (purely mechanical): "I'm gonna use mine, too." Not individually resolved
2 S50 Harvesting roll — Dragon Turtle carcass (d4 = 2) Rage: "I'm viewing my harvesting with rage, because I'm still raging, so that's what I feel." 12 total (result deferred)
3 S51 Strength (Athletics) — tearing the dockmaster's bolted-down coin box off his desk (had already passed with 21; spent it anyway) Accomplishment: "I'm feeling… a small amount, a feeling like accomplishment that we are making progress in helping to right this wrong that we have done to this town." The bolts sheared and flew across the room — the box came free like it was nailed down with paper
4 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — day 3 of the Luskan → Neverwinter march (base roll and die result not read out) Calm: "Oh, I'm feeling, um… Zen. Fair." Day passed uneventfully
5 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the Baldur's Gate → Elturel march. d4(3) (her base roll was not read out) — none narrated (purely mechanical) Travel uneventful
6 S52 (2026-07-12) Save DC — raised her Restraining Ward from DC 15 to DC 17 (d4 = 2), forcing a Strength save on the enemy caster (Keith/Morrow) who had dropped invisibility to Fireball the clustered party. Available to her, per the DM, "because you are not yet raging" Anger: "then yeah, I'll apply my Tempered Soul to it, and I am feeling angry that he is trying to fireball me." Decisive — the +2 was the whole fight. He rolled exactly 15: a pass against the base DC 15, a failure against DC 17. DM: "He did roll a 15 otherwise. So you did need this to ensure that he failed." Restrained — "the chains wrapped around him and pulled his arms to his side, and he wasn't able to, uh, finish the spell." The Fireball never went off

Karma

# Session Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
1 S50 Long-rest Constitution save / Survival check (DC 18) — no emotion narrated (purely mechanical): "Might as well use mine." Not individually resolved
2 S50 Harvesting roll — Dragon Turtle carcass (herbalism kit) Curiosity: "Pure curiosity and interest. I want to know what we're going to be able to make from this." 26 ("close")
3 S51 Wisdom save (DC 20) — the infernal pulse of the vault melt she herself triggered with Flaming Sphere Hardened resolve: "I'm going to feel… just hardened resolve and confidence flow through me. Maybe it was misplaced confidence, but it was confidence nonetheless." Took 2 psychic (halved from 4)
4 S52 (2026-07-12) Survival check — the night's camp (night 3 → 4). 9 + d4(4) = 13 — the best possible roll on the die Confidence: "I'm gonna, I'm gonna go ahead and use my tempered soul." / "I'm feeling confident I'm gonna get an excellent night's sleep." Lifted a below-average roll to a solid one; party average 16.3
5 S52 (2026-07-12) Save DC — raised her Cone of Cold from DC 16 to DC 17 (die = 1), catching four enemies (Vex, Keith, Morrow, Rook) in a Constitution save for ~35 damage. Prompted by Baelgrum ("Have you used the TemperChan?") Ferocious confidence: "Oh yeah, I'm gonna use a tempered, because I'm really gonna… I'm just feeling so confident, I'm gonna fuck these guys up." The single point mattered. Enemy saves: 15+1 = 16, 3+2 = 5, 12+1 = 13, 5+2 = 7. That first 16 would have met the base DC 16 and succeeded — against DC 17 it fails. DM: "They rolled real bad. All of them are taking full damage." 36 damage each; Keith, Morrow and Rook all left "looking… extremely bad"

Declined or deferred uses

Also part of the record — moments a character weighed the surge and held it:

  • Gootcha (S50, Ice Spider Queen): a hopeless roll — "even 4 points isn't gonna get me anywhere."
  • Keyleth (S50, Dragon Turtle): offered mid-fight, chose the Hellhound Whistle's Erupting Earth instead and saved the surge for the harvest.
  • Gootcha (S51, stables heist): offered a retcon on the stealth or lockpicking check — "Actually, you know what, I'm gonna save it, because we might need to stealth our way into another place." (First deliberate hoarding of the surge.)
  • Baelgrum (S51, the vault): passed the DC 20 clean — "I guess it doesn't matter. I was gonna say Tempered Soul."
  • Keyleth (S52, day-2 survival): the DM invited her by name to spend on a nature/survival check to grow her Aspect — "these are past checks, but if you want to use your tempered soul on it, it helps to develop your aspect in nature and survival" — and she let it pass (she had rolled 5, but with +11 Survival).
  • Keyleth (S52, the villagers): an Insight check of 3 on the die (11 total) went un-tempered — she used the mediocre result to pick out the most talkative villager, then handed the moment to Baelgrum instead.
  • Baelgrum (7), Gootcha (18), Xanphina (23) (S52, night camp): all three sat out the night-camp survival check while Karma, Shade and Keyleth spent. Baelgrum ate a 7 without flinching — he had just confirmed with the DM that camping resets the pool.
  • Karma (S52, the Elturel march): the only member of the party not to spend on that survival check. Her 16 stood on its own.

Tally

Feat uses only (the S50 return strikes are logged in the Prelude above and not counted here).

Character S50 S51 S52 Total uses With a feeling narrated Purely mechanical
Baelgrum 2 2 3 7 6 1
Keyleth 2 1 4 7 5 (1 vague) 1
Shade 2 1 3 6 5 1
Gootcha 2 1 3 6 5 1
Xanphina 2 1 3 6 4 2
Karma 2 1 2 5 4 1
Total 12 7 18 37 29 (+1 vague) 7

Session 52 at a glance: 18 spends — as many as the first two sessions combined. Six of them were on travel/survival checks during the two long marches (the DM actively encouraged spending there to grow Aspects), and five landed in the road ambush, where four separate spends were outcome-flipping: Gootcha's miss-into-hit that exposed Rook, Shade's blindness save won by the exact margin, Xanphina's +2 that shut down a Fireball, and Karma's +1 that turned a successful save into full damage on all four enemies. Baelgrum's d6 Command DC 21 halted three enemies at once.

Session 53 spends (2026-08-09) — the Battle of Nuts Deep

Appended as a session block; fold into the per-character tables above at next full revision. The master tally does not yet include these four spends.

New ruling made mid-session: a save-DC boost applies to one creature only of a multi-target spell — made at the moment of Baelgrum's Fireball spend (#1 below) and now standing law on Tempered Soul.

Character Empowered Feeling & how described (quote) Outcome
Baelgrum Save DC — 4th-level Fireball vs. the undead horde; d4(1) raised the DC to 18 for the dragonborn cultist only (17 for everyone else), under the brand-new one-creature ruling. In-domain? No — he chose the d4: "I guess this has to be the four one, because this is not necessarily protecting." Vengeance: "My guy's pissed, right? He has a real thing against the Dragon Cult, so he wants to send these guys back to hell." The dragonborn failed (a 2−2); zombies incinerated (Zombie C dead even on a save), the dragonborn left bloodied.
Keyleth Damage — the killing of the first blue dragon wyrmling. After her super-inspiration auto-crit (doubled bow, Hunter's Mark, Ensnaring Strike, re-rolled Hellfire Pixies), the DM told her the d6 would probably finish it — she spent it. In-domain: "it's your hunter's [aspect], basically" — her prey, found and struck. (Second occurrence of the damage-target anomaly — the feat nominally rides d20 tests; DM allowed it both times.) Declared through action rather than narration — the Nuts Deep-inspired killing shot itself. Killed the wyrmling — ensnared out of the sky, dead on the ground, pixies desecrating the corpse. She had earlier declined the spend when told it likely wasn't enough, and committed only once the crit made it decisive.
Baelgrum Save DC — Command: "Halt" (1st level) on the second blue dragon wyrmling; Aspect d6(2) → DC 19. Squarely in his protection domain, and declared as such. Protective calm after the storm: "I've calmed down a little bit after satiating my anger on the zombies and the cultists, and now I just want to protect Gootcha and Will." (Will was down; Gootcha exposed on the wall.) Failed. The wyrmling halted mid-air — no move, action, or bonus action — and, flying rather than hovering, could only land on the wall, where Gootcha poisoned and killed it. The spend that grounded the fight's last flier.
Xanphina Wisdom save (DC 15) at the start of her turn against the necromancer's Bestow Curse (fail = lose her action); rolled low, added her d6 (in-domain — breaking through a force pressing on her). — none narrated; a purely mechanical grasp at freedom ("Can I use my… whatever, Tempered Soul.") Failed anyway — "didn't get me there." The DM canvassed the table for a reroll ability; nobody had one. She lost her action, and spent the turn on Shield of Faith (bonus action) instead — giving Big Karma +2 AC.

Declined / deferred (S53): Keyleth initially held her die on the wyrmling when told "it's probably not enough to take them out" — the model hoarding play — then spent the moment it became lethal. Gootcha (played by Ashley remotely) made no spends this session; Karma made none; Shade was absent.

Session 53 at a glance: 4 spends, 3 outcome-relevant. Baelgrum's Command DC 19 was the load-bearer — it deleted the second wyrmling's entire action economy and handed Gootcha the kill. The session also produced the one-creature save-DC ruling and confirmed the proficiency-scaled pool (7 + 5 charges at level 9).

Errata (2026-08-09)

  • Damage is a legal target — official. The DM has ruled that the Tempered Soul die may be added to damage, not just to d20 tests: "It's a less useful usage so I don't see a problem with it." This supersedes the "mechanically anomalous / flagged for the DM" notes on Keyleth's S52 spend #7 (Worm Reaver damage vs. Vex) and her S53 wyrmling-kill spend — both stand as rules-clean.
  • One-creature save-DC rule (made at the table, S53): a save-DC boost applies to only one creature of a multi-target spell. Recorded in the S53 block above and on Tempered Soul.
