The Harpers' Read

The red is the apex of the chromatic kind — vain, avaricious, and incandescent with pride. Its breath is a cone of furnace fire, and fire does nothing to it; bring none. Its terror runs deeper than its cousins', and its temper is a weapon you can turn: a red goaded into rage fights less cleverly. Deny it the high air and the open slope; rob it of its hoard and you rob it of its reason.

The company has killed a red and wears the proof: the red dragon Vaartox the Red fell to them, and an artificer worked its scales into Red Dragon Scale Mail (38–39). They have the measure of the kind in battle, if not of the eldest and largest.
