Prophecy of the Thorn-Born Star
The Prophecy of the Thorn-Born Star is a piece of foretelling that the party has begun to circle, concerning the return of Tiamat. Its best-remembered line speaks of "five heads rising from the shadow's root" — readily read as the five-headed Dragon Queen rising from a hidden seed.
Surfacing
In Session 48, Keyleth raised the prophecy with Maccath the Crimson, quoting the "five heads rising from the shadow's root" passage. Maccath found it vaguely familiar but could not place it — and, now aware of the Cult of the Dragon's plot to summon Tiamat, agreed to research it properly. (It had earlier been noted as the "Prophecy of the Thorn-Born Star" hook during the voyage; the DM has confirmed out of character that it is a genuine prophecy tied to Tiamat being seeded into the world.)
Interpretation (open)
- "Five heads" — almost certainly Tiamat, the five-headed chromatic dragon goddess.
- "Shadow's root" / "Thorn-Born" — unresolved. The imagery of something growing from a buried or thorned root suggests Tiamat's return is being cultivated rather than simply summoned.
