Illithids, also known as mind flayers, are a race of psionic aberrations from the Underdark. These malevolent creatures are known for their psychic powers, their practice of consuming brains, and their horrific experiments that transform other creatures into aberrations.

Description

Mind flayers are humanoid creatures with octopus-like heads featuring four writhing tentacles around a lamprey-like mouth. They possess powerful psionic abilities, including telepathy, mind control, and devastating psychic attacks. Illithids are feared throughout the Underdark for their cruel intelligence and their tendency to enslave other creatures to serve their colonies.

Society

Illithids organize themselves into colonies ruled by elder brains—massive psionic entities formed from the brains of dead illithids. They create thralls from captured creatures, dominating their minds and forcing them into servitude. Mind flayers view other intelligent beings primarily as sources of brains to consume or subjects for their twisted experiments.

Experiments and Creations

Illithids are notorious for conducting cruel experiments on captured creatures, transforming them into aberrations through a combination of physical modification and psionic manipulation. These experiments produce various horrific results, including:

• Mind Gobbler - A psionic aberration discovered beneath Garmok's Mine, created by transforming an ordinary creature (possibly a turkey) into a dragon-sized horror with tentacles and psychic powers
• Gobble Thralls - Mind-controlled servants created by the Mind Gobbler, enslaved through psionic domination

The purpose of such experiments remains unclear, though they demonstrate the illithids' mastery of both biological manipulation and psionic enhancement.

Connection to Garmok's Mine

Evidence of illithid activity has been discovered in the deep tunnels beneath Garmok's Mine. The Mind Gobbler represents clear proof of mind flayer experiments in the region, though whether an active illithid colony exists nearby or the experiments were conducted long ago remains unknown.

Ilra, a drow researcher studying the aberrations beneath Garmok's Mine, has documented extensive evidence of illithid involvement in creating the Mind Gobbler. She also mentioned potential connections between illithids and aboleths in the deeper parts of the mine network.
