Sleeping Giant Tavern
Sleeping Giant Tavern
The Sleeping Giant Tavern is a ramshackle alehouse located on the southern edge of Phandalin. Known for its foul ale, foul-mouthed patrons, and the occasional brawl, it has become the unofficial headquarters of the Redbrands — the gang that once terrorized the town.
Overview
In Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin, the adventurers confronted several Redbrands here, ending in a spectacularly chaotic fight that reduced much of the tavern’s furniture to splinters. Despite its sordid reputation, the Sleeping Giant remains a cornerstone of local gossip, trade, and criminal activity.
The tavern’s warped sign depicts a sleeping hill giant with a tankard in hand — though most locals joke that the image looks more drunk than asleep.
Ownership
The tavern is run by **Grista**, a stout and perpetually scowling dwarf woman with no patience for nonsense. While she claims neutrality, she tolerated the Redbrands’ presence as long as they paid for their drinks (and didn’t smash *too* much furniture).
Rumors persist that she has quiet ties to the Zhentarim, explaining why the Redbrands were allowed to use her establishment as a base of operations.
Notable Patrons
- The Redbrands – Frequented the tavern for drink and intimidation.
- Halia Thornton – Occasionally visits to keep an ear on Redbrand movements.
- Adventurers, mercenaries, and the occasional would-be hero.
Current Status
Following the adventurers’ battle with the Redbrands, the tavern sustained heavy damage but continues to operate — though under closer scrutiny from townsfolk and the Order of the Gauntlet.
Appearances
- Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin – Scene of the Redbrand confrontation and brawl.
<details><summary>🧩 DM Notes (Spoilers)</summary>
Truth: Grista maintains quiet contact with a Zhentarim fence who handles smuggled goods through Phandalin. The tavern’s cellar contains hidden storage used to move contraband between caravans — and could later be repurposed by cult agents or resistance networks.
Foreshadowing:
- The Sleeping Giant could become a future meeting place for faction emissaries or spies during Rise of Tiamat.
- Rumors of strange visitors at night may foreshadow the Cult of the Dragon’s efforts to infiltrate Zhentarim trade lines.
- If rebuilt or owned by the party, the tavern could serve as their local headquarters and gathering spot for faction quests.
