Overview
The Ashen Covenant was a secret alliance of five young chromatic dragons tasked with a singular, devastating purpose: to eliminate individuals, bloodlines, and sacred sites prophesied to one day oppose the rise of Tiamat. Formed in secrecy and forged in blood, the Covenant operated as an elite draconic strike force serving the Cult of the Dragon in its most extreme ideological form.
Though believed to be myth or isolated incidents by most factions, recent revelations—including the confession and death of Vaartox the Red—have exposed the Covenant's existence and its role in a continent-spanning purge decades in the making.
Purpose
The Ashen Covenant was created by order of high-ranking wyrmspeakers and blessed (indirectly) by Tiamat herself through infernal intermediaries. Its primary purpose was:
- To pre-emptively destroy threats to Tiamat's eventual summoning, including:
- Bloodlines descended from ancient dragon-slayers.
- Fey enclaves guarding prophetic knowledge.
- Sacred druidic sites, nature-worshipping orders, and peacekeeping cults.
- Hidden magical nexuses that could be used to banish or bind extraplanar entities (including gods).
The Ashen Covenant's attacks were surgical, symbolic, and utterly devastating. Survivors were rare by design.
Founding Members
Each member of the Covenant represented one of Tiamat's five heads, and their initial assault on Glimmerwood was known as the Trial of Flame—a test to prove their loyalty and ascendancy within the Cult.
- Vaartox the Red – Adult red dragon, slain by the party in Veylan Duskbane's tomb [1]
- Tharzyzzul the Black – Young black dragon, presumed alive
- Unknown White – Identity unknown
- Sevaltharix the Green – Young green dragon
- Xhaerenth the Blue – Young blue dragon
Their most infamous act was the Destruction of Narthalas, a Glimmerwood village tied to a fey prophecy. During the assault, Vaartox personally burned the forest home of Keyleth, a future member of the Emerald Enclave, mistakenly believing her slain.

Known Attacks

Current Status
The Covenant is believed to have disbanded or gone dormant following Vaartox's death and the party's disruption of Cult operations. However, at least three members remain at large:
- Tharzyzzul the Black – Presumed alive and operating independently
- Unknown White dragon
- Sevaltharix the Green
- Xhaerenth the Blue
The Talons of Veylan, particularly Sylwen Moondrift, have hunted the Covenant for 50 years.
