Zelene
Zelene is a mage of the Arcane Brotherhood, stationed at the Host Tower of the Arcane in Luskan. She gave Deez Nuts the intelligence they needed to begin their search for Maccath the Crimson in the Sea of Moving Ice — and later, cured of the red-coin corruption by the same party, became the voice of the Brotherhood's genuine alliance with them.
Description
A human woman in her mid-40s, tall, with dark gray hair worn in a tight bun and the robes of the Brotherhood. She keeps an Abjuration globe on her desk that functions as a light (and, the party suspected, a truth-ward). During the events of Session 51 the party learned the truth of the globe: it is just a mood light — theater, not divination. It always was.
Role in Campaign
In the first sitting of Session 47 (2026-02-01), the party came to the Host Tower of the Arcane seeking word of Maccath the Crimson. Zelene recounted the researcher's fate from the Brotherhood's records: Maccath had gone north roughly three years earlier to study Arauthator ("Old White Death") and the Draakhorn; she continued sending magical messages for weeks after she stopped returning, the last reporting that she believed she had found the dragon's glacier lair; nothing had been heard since, and two Brotherhood search parties sent after her were lost. Zelene warned of the Sea of Moving Ice's lethal cold and authorized the Host Tower to sell the party cold-weather magic "at cost," with a buy-back arranged on their return.
Session 51 — corruption and cure (2026-06-28)
When the party returned to Luskan with the rescued Maccath, they found Zelene bloodshot and sleepless: she had spent roughly two weeks corrupted by the blood-red infernal coins, during which the Brotherhood hoarded 2,400 of them in the Host Tower vault "for study" — the coins, in truth, keeping the Brotherhood. Without knowing why, she had recalled all 42 of the Brotherhood's regional mages to the tower (the coins gathering guards for their hoard), and ran her fake "truth orb" through the party's whole audience with her.
Baelgrum freed her with a feint — offering her the coins, then landing Remove Curse by touch. Horrified at her lost two weeks, Zelene shared a one-use teleportation imprint of the vault's interior so the party could reach the hoard, and declared the vault off-limits for a week as cover. After Karma's Flaming Sphere melted the final 2,400 coins and the curse broke city-wide, Zelene offered something rarer than magic: honesty. She confessed that her earlier pledge of support had been an empty brush-off — "I was actually just trying to get you to leave. I had no intent of actually providing help had you asked. But that has changed. We will be at your service." The Arcane Brotherhood is now genuinely committed: mages will be dispatched to Waterdeep to stand with the Council of Waterdeep against Tiamat. She also gave the party a sending stone.
A loose end: Shade convinced the cured Zelene (Deception 26) that the rival Bronze Blades carry red coins and should be searched thoroughly — an entirely false rumor the Brotherhood's mages now intend to act on.
