The Cult of the Dragon has discovered and attacked Halia Thornton's Zhentarim waypoints along the trade routes from Phandalin to Neverwinter and Waterdeep. The cultists murdered the operators and stole magic items, mistakenly believing these were the legendary items coming from the Forge of Spells—but they're actually just Halia's regular trade goods.

Source: DM notes reveal this situation. The Cult is hunting for the source of powerful magic items in the Phandalin region but doesn't know about the Forge of Spells. They attacked Halia's network instead.

What's Known:

• Halia operates waypoints on the trade routes from Phandalin to major cities
• One waypoint is halfway to Neverwinter—a small farming community with 3 farms, one working with Halia
• Another waypoint is halfway to Waterdeep, north of Thornhold—3 farmsteads, one working with Halia
• The Cult attacked both waypoints, killing the operators and stealing goods
• The northern waypoint was run by two brothers; they have two cousins in Neverwinter:

 * Zandirk runs a shop that sells Halia's goods
 * Sanood is grieving and drinking, blaming Zandirk for getting the brothers killed through "less than legal dealings"

• The Cult believes fantastic magic items are coming from this region
• The REAL source is the Forge of Spells operated by Thurmin and Nundro (guarded by Venomfang)
• Halia's goods were NOT the legendary items the Cult was seeking
• Both Thurmin and Halia want the killings to stop
• Thurmin would consider working with Halia but fears she'll try to seize the Forge
