The Harpers' Read
An aboleth is not a beast but an intelligence older than the surface world, and it fights with the mind first. It can enslave a will at range and see through the captured eyes; its tentacles transmute flesh into a slime that cracks and chokes away from water. It is all but helpless on dry land, so the fight is won by drawing it from its lake or staying well off the shore. Above all, guard your minds — and never believe the voice that offers you exactly what you most want.
It is older than the gods, and it does not truly die. An aboleth is primordial — said to have existed since the beginning of time, and to feed by drawing the memories and knowledge of those it ensnares onto the Material Plane. Destroying its body is not the end of it: it simply reforms elsewhere, perhaps even on another plane. The drow researcher Ilyra keeps the one beneath Garmok's Mine as a long-term subject of study for precisely this reason.
Encounters of Record
The company met one lurking in an underground lake beneath Garmok's Mine — a wary standoff more than a brawl (46). It never engaged them directly, but it accepted the drow corpses they threw into the water (tidying the lake of bodies with unsettling, unhurried care) and the Eye of Gilbraxis pressed a flat warning onto Shade: "avoid the water." It remains alive in its lake.
