Bearded Devil
Harper Field Dossier
Combat reference
Type Fiend (devil) — a foot-soldier of the Hells, glaive in hand and a writhing beard at its chin
Vulnerabilities None found; radiant light and a paladin's smite bite it as they bite all fiends
Resistances Cold; and common steel that is neither silvered nor ensorcelled
Immunities Fire and poison (the old infernal lore; not put to the test at the table)
Condition Immunities Poisoned (lore)
Strong Saves Resists spells readily — the magic resistance of its kind
Senses Sees in the dark, including the magical kind
Movement Afoot; no wings
Notable Abilities Strikes with a glaive and with a barbed beard that reaches farther than any beard ought; its wounds bleed and fester until magically closed (an infernal hurt); as with all devils, slain on this plane it falls to dust and re-forms in the Hells unless its soul is taken first
Provenance
Knowledge One encounter, at the infernal rift beneath Garmok's Mine
First Encountered Session 44, the rift chamber
Filed by The company's own account

A fiend of the Nine Hells, lesser than the Horned Devil but the same breed of trouble. See also the erinyes Zarchelia.

The Harpers' Read

The lowest of the proper devils your company has faced, and still no easy kill. It wades in with a glaive and that horrible reaching beard, and like its greater kin it leaves wounds that will not clot — bleeding that runs on, turn after turn, until a healer's hand closes it. Treat the bleeding as the real danger, not the cut.

The same rules hold as for all its breed: radiant and smite tell on it, common steel less so, and your spells may simply slide away. And the same hard-won trick ends it for good — take the soul out of the Pit's reach (the Raven Queen's blessed crossbow), or it merely re-forms below and waits.

Encounters of Record

Session 44 — The infernal rift beneath the mine

A bearded devil fought among the fiends labouring to free a chained horned devil at the rift beneath Garmok's Mine, alongside a hell hound and a lemure. The company and the Bronze Blades cut them all down; a soul taken by Gootcha's crossbow was sent to the Raven Queen rather than back to the Hells.
