King Grol

King Grol, Hobgoblin Warlord of the Cragmaw Tribe
    • King Grol** is the hobgoblin chieftain of the Cragmaw Tribe and ruler of Cragmaw Castle. Brutal, cunning, and possessed of a fierce sense of tribal pride, he commands his goblinoid followers through strength and fear. Despite his title, few outside the tribe recognize his claim of kingship — though none who have challenged it have lived to mock him twice.

Overview

King Grol rose to power through conquest, uniting several scattered goblin and hobgoblin bands under his banner. Under his leadership, the Cragmaws became one of the most organized and dangerous raiding tribes along the Sword Coast.

When approached by the mysterious Black Spider, Grol accepted gold and promises of power in exchange for capturing Gundren Rockseeker and securing his map to Wave Echo Cave. The alliance was born of greed and opportunity, though neither truly trusted the other.

Personality

Grol is pragmatic and calculating — not the mindless brute many assume. He views strength as the only currency of leadership and despises weakness in all forms. Despite his savagery, he honors bargains when it suits him and is surprisingly articulate for a goblinoid warlord.

Relationships

Current Status

Alive and entrenched within Cragmaw Castle, surrounded by loyal hobgoblin guards. He continues to consolidate his tribe’s power and schemes to expand his domain beyond the forests.

Truth: King Grol’s deal with the Black Spider has begun to sour. He knows the Spider’s true masters are neither drow nor simple mercenaries but agents of a shadowed cult that reveres dragons. Grol has intercepted correspondence mentioning the “Queen Below” and suspects that the Spider’s operations are part of a greater design.

Foreshadowing:

  • King Grol’s awareness of the Cult’s machinations allows him to serve as an unlikely informant or reluctant ally if spared.
  • His tactical intelligence and goblinoid army could later resurface during Rise of Tiamat — either as mercenaries, raiders, or uneasy allies against the Cult of the Dragon.
  • His possession of ancient dwarven relics from the castle’s lower chambers ties his tribe directly to the forgotten magics of the Phandelver Pact.
