Sildar Hallwinter, Veteran of the Order of the Gauntlet

A seasoned warrior and loyal friend, Sildar Hallwinter is a member of the Order of the Gauntlet and one-time adventurer who now serves as a mentor, diplomat, and reluctant bureaucrat for the cause of justice across the Sword Coast.

Background

Once a knight of the Griffon Cavalry in Waterdeep, Sildar Hallwinter now works with the Order of the Gauntlet to restore order and decency in the frontier towns of the North.

In Session 01 – The Road to Phandalin, he accompanied Gundren Rockseeker to Phandalin in the hopes of meeting an old friend — a wizard who had gone missing in the area. However, both were ambushed on the Triboar Trail. Sildar was captured and later rescued by the adventurers during Session 02 – The Goblin Lair Negotiations.

Upon reaching Phandalin, Sildar quickly recognized the town's lawlessness and offered the group a reward to deal with the Redbrands and investigate Cragmaw Castle.

In Session 06 – Shadows and Allegiances, Sildar's faith in the Order was shaken when Glasstaff was revealed to be his old friend Iarno Albrek, a former Order associate.

In Session 09 – Wave Echo Cave: The Depths Awaken, Sildar hired Xanphina, a half-orc barbarian, to assist the party in hunting the Black Spider.

Relationships

Current Status

After being rescued by the party, Sildar has taken up temporary residence in Phandalin, offering quests, resources, and moral support to the adventurers. He remains physically weakened but continues to act as a liaison between the Gauntlet and the region.

Truth: Sildar's missing wizard friend is Iarno Albrek, now the villainous Glasstaff. He conceals this realization until he can confirm the truth, torn between duty and denial.

Foreshadowing:

  • Sildar's Gauntlet ties can evolve into a formal alliance during Rise of Tiamat, with him serving as a potential intermediary for the party within the Council of Waterdeep.
  • His mentorship may foreshadow later cooperation between the Gauntlet, Harpers, and the adventurers as they confront the Cult of the Dragon.
  • His sense of justice and leadership could become critical if the Gauntlet factional disputes arise in later arcs.
