Cragmaw Castle
Cragmaw Castle
Cragmaw Castle is a ruined fortress deep within the forests south of the Neverwinter Wood, serving as the seat of King Grol and the heart of the Cragmaw Tribe. Once an ancient human stronghold, its shattered towers and moss-covered walls have been repurposed by goblinoids into a formidable lair.
Overview
The adventurers first learned of Cragmaw Castle’s existence in Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin, when Sildar Hallwinter revealed that Gundren Rockseeker was likely being held there after his abduction. The castle is both a military outpost and a prison, guarded by goblins, hobgoblins, and their wolf companions.
The fortress stands as a symbol of the Cragmaw Tribe’s growing organization and strength under King Grol — a level of discipline unusual for goblinoids, suggesting outside influence.
Notable Areas
- **Throne Room:** The audience chamber of King Grol, decorated with scavenged human armor and bones.
- **Goblin Barracks:** Crude sleeping quarters reeking of sweat, blood, and old ale.
- **Ruined Tower:** Collapsed structure now home to giant spiders.
- **Dungeon Cells:** Used to imprison Gundren Rockseeker and other captives.
Faction Influence
- The Cragmaw Tribe controls the castle directly under King Grol.
- The Black Spider provides resources, gold, and information in exchange for obedience and the capture of Gundren.
- The Cult of the Dragon has not yet appeared here directly, but whispers of their involvement are beginning to spread through the Spider’s network.
Current Status
As of Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin, the party has yet to reach the castle. Gundren Rockseeker remains imprisoned, and the goblins prepare for further raids along the Triboar Trail.
Appearances
- Mentioned in Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin as the likely location of Gundren Rockseeker.

Truth: Cragmaw Castle once belonged to a forgotten human noble line, destroyed in the Orc Wars. The castle’s substructure contains remnants of an ancient dwarven foundation linked to the same forges beneath Wave Echo Cave. King Grol unknowingly guards a fragment of the same arcane seals once used to bind draconic spirits.
Foreshadowing:
- The Black Spider’s manipulation of King Grol sets a pattern for how ambitious intermediaries will later serve the Cult of the Dragon.
- Artifacts recovered from Cragmaw Castle — particularly dwarven relics — can tie into the lore of dragonforged weapons introduced in Rise of Tiamat.
- Should the party spare or parley with King Grol, he could become an unlikely informant about the cult’s early movements in the North.
