Svirfneblin
Svirfneblin (pronounced: SVEER-neb-lin), also known as deep gnomes, are a subterranean race of gnomes native to the Underdark. Where their surface cousins are known for their whimsy and love of illusion, svirfneblin are somber, cautious, and pragmatic - shaped by centuries of survival in one of the most dangerous environments in Faerûn. Despite the harsh realities of their existence, they remain fundamentally good-natured people who value family, community, and craftsmanship above all else.
Physical Description
Svirfneblin possess distinctive features adapted to life in the Underdark:
- Skin: Gray-brown, rocky, or earth-toned complexion that helps them blend with stone
- Hair: Bald or with thin, stringy hair in shades of gray or brown; males often have long, wispy beards
- Eyes: Large and luminous, adapted to near-total darkness; typically gray, brown, or black
- Build: Stocky and compact, even more so than surface gnomes; standing 3 to 3.5 feet tall
- Clothing: Practical, earth-toned garments that blend with their environment
- Appearance: Weathered and careworn, reflecting the hardships of Underdark life
Their coloration and build allow them to blend remarkably well with stone and rock, making them difficult to spot in their natural environment.
Society and Culture
[FR Canon] Svirfneblin society is built around principles of community survival, careful resource management, and protection of their hidden settlements.
Community Structure
Unlike the chaotic and individualistic surface gnomes, svirfneblin organize themselves into tight-knit, highly structured communities:
- Villages: Small, hidden settlements of 100-500 individuals
- Leadership: Typically governed by a council of elders or a respected leader (such as a Foreman)
- Family Units: Strong family bonds, with children cherished and protected
- Communal Labor: Everyone contributes to the community's survival
- Defensive Mindset: Settlements are heavily trapped and concealed
Hidden Settlements
[FR Canon] Svirfneblin settlements are marvels of defensive engineering:
- Secret Entrances: Multiple hidden passages, often requiring knowledge of specific routes
- Elaborate Traps: Deadfalls, pitfalls, and mechanical traps to deter intruders
- Stone Doors: Expertly crafted to blend seamlessly with natural rock
- Elevated Positions: Guard posts on high ledges with excellent sightlines
- Escape Routes: Always multiple ways to evacuate in case of attack
Cultural Values
Svirfneblin culture emphasizes:
- Survival: The primary concern in the dangerous Underdark
- Family: Children are precious and carefully protected
- Craftsmanship: Expert mining, gemcutting, and stoneworking
- Caution: Strangers are viewed with deep suspicion until proven trustworthy
- Practicality: No room for frivolity when survival is at stake
- Isolation: Prefer to be left alone and avoid contact with other races when possible
- Trust: Once earned, svirfneblin loyalty is absolute
The deep gnomes are particularly protective of their children, often keeping them hidden during any contact with outsiders.
Trade and Commerce
While generally isolationist, svirfneblin do engage in careful, limited trade:
- Gemstones: Expert cutters and appraisers of precious stones
- Metalwork: Skilled in working with rare Underdark metals
- Tools and Mechanisms: Master crafters of mechanical devices
- Trade Partners: Cautiously trade with surface gnomes, some dwarves, and occasionally Derro
Abilities and Traits
[FR Canon] Svirfneblin possess several innate abilities that aid their survival in the Underdark:
Darkvision
Deep gnomes have Superior Darkvision extending 120 feet, allowing them to navigate the lightless tunnels of the Underdark with ease. Unlike Drow, they do not suffer from sunlight sensitivity, though prolonged exposure to bright light can be uncomfortable.
Stone Camouflage
Svirfneblin have an innate ability to blend with rocky terrain, granting them advantage on Stealth checks made to hide in rocky or subterranean environments. This natural camouflage makes them incredibly difficult to detect when they don't wish to be found.
Natural Miners
Deep gnomes are among the finest miners in all of Faerûn:
- Geological Expertise: Instinctive understanding of stone and minerals
- Tunnel Navigation: Rarely get lost in underground environments
- Structural Assessment: Can identify weak points and stable areas in cave systems
- Gemcutting: Legendary skill in cutting and appraising gemstones
Gnome Cunning
Like all gnomes, svirfneblin have advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic, making them resistant to mental manipulation and enchantment.
Combat Skills
While not naturally aggressive, svirfneblin are trained in:
- Guerrilla Tactics: Hit-and-run attacks, ambushes from elevated positions
- Traps and Mechanisms: Expert use of mechanical defenses
- Dart Weapons: Favored ranged weapon for guards
- Defensive Fighting: Protecting their homes and families
Relations with Other Races
Svirfneblin maintain cautious relationships with most races, shaped by centuries of threats and occasional alliances.
Drow (Dark Elves)
[FR Canon] The Drow are the greatest threat to svirfneblin communities. Drow raiding parties regularly hunt deep gnomes for slaves, viewing them as valuable workers for their cruel cities. This has created a state of perpetual warfare, with svirfneblin developing increasingly elaborate defenses against drow incursions. Deep gnomes hate and fear the drow above all other races.
Surface Gnomes
[FR Canon] Svirfneblin maintain friendly but distant relations with their surface cousins (rock gnomes and forest gnomes). They sometimes trade with surface gnomes and will offer them hospitality, though cultural differences make close relationships difficult.
Dwarves
Svirfneblin have cautious respect for dwarves, particularly shield dwarves and gold dwarves, viewing them as fellow masters of stone and metal. However, they are deeply suspicious of Duergar (gray dwarves), who share the Underdark and sometimes raid svirfneblin settlements.
Other Underdark Races
- Derro: Occasional trade partners, though always approached with caution
- Mind Flayers: Avoided at all costs
- Duergar: Distrusted and sometimes hostile
- Surface Dwellers: Viewed with suspicion but more favorably than most Underdark denizens
Preference for Surface Dwellers
Generally speaking, svirfneblin are more inclined to trust surface-dwelling races (humans, elves, dwarves, halflings) than other Underdark denizens, as surface dwellers are less likely to raid them for slaves or resources.
In the Campaign
The party encountered a svirfneblin community during Session 46 in the depths of Garmok's Mine.
Svirfneblin Village
This hidden deep gnome settlement is located in the lower-left section of Garmok's Mine:
- Population: 15-20 adults plus 5 children
- Leadership: The Foreman, a respected leader who manages mining operations and community affairs
- Defenses: High ledges with guard posts, allowing sentries to observe intruders from approximately 40 feet above
- Strategic Position: Controls access to a network of tunnels that could bypass hostile Myconid territory
Initial Contact
When the party first approached svirfneblin territory, the deep gnome guards were cautious and silent, watching from their elevated positions. Shade's clever use of a pun ("Gnomes! We gnome you're out there!") and excellent Persuasion check (23) helped establish peaceful intentions.
However, before the svirfneblin could respond, a Drow raiding party attacked - validating the deep gnomes' cautious nature and demonstrating the constant threat they face.
Alliance with the Party
After the party defeated the drow raiding party led by Commander Viren Tharin, the svirfneblin began to trust them. The Foreman explained their situation:
- The community needed to create a new passage through the mine to avoid Myconid territory
- Their winch and lift system had been mysteriously breaking down
- They needed help repairing the winch before mining could proceed
The Winch Quest
The party helped the svirfneblin by:
- Investigating the winch system
- Defeating a Rust Monster that had been causing the mechanical failures
- Eliminating a Mimic disguised as part of the winch equipment
- Negotiating with Derro traders for replacement parts
- Successfully repairing the winch system
Reward: The Mattock of the Titan
Impressed by the party's competence and goodwill, the Foreman presented them with the legendary Mattock of the Titan - a powerful magical mining tool. This was an extraordinary show of trust and gratitude, as such an artifact would be priceless to a mining community.
The Foreman directed the party to use the Mattock to dig a new tunnel in the southern section, creating a safe passage that would benefit both the svirfneblin and the party's mission.
Current Status
The svirfneblin of Garmok's Mine are now allied with the party, viewing them as trustworthy friends who helped defend them against their hated drow enemies and assisted with a critical infrastructure project.
