Agatha

Agatha, the Banshee of Neverwinter Wood

Agatha is a spectral banshee who haunts the dark glades north of Neverwinter Wood. Once a beautiful and accomplished elven lorekeeper, she now exists as a tormented echo of her former self — bound to undeath by vanity, betrayal, and magic long forgotten.

Background

In Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin, Sister Garaele of the Shrine of Luck asked the adventurers to seek out Agatha and offer her a silver comb as a token of respect, hoping to persuade her to reveal the location of the lost spellbook of the wizard Bowgentle.

Agatha is known to appear to travelers who speak to her with courtesy and offer her gifts of beauty or craftsmanship. Those who treat her poorly or attempt to coerce her face her wrath and the chill of her scream.

Relationships

Current Status

Still bound to her lair near Conyberry in the woods, Agatha remains an unpredictable presence — sometimes helpful, often dangerous, and always proud.

Appearances

<details><summary>🧩 DM Notes (Spoilers)</summary>

Truth: Agatha was once an elven mage of great renown who preserved magical lore for the High Forest. Her transformation into a banshee came after her beauty and pride led her to spurn the gods. She retains fragments of her ancient knowledge, including hints about spells of containment once used against dragons.

Foreshadowing:

  • If treated with respect, Agatha could reveal information about magical wards and enchantments later relevant to the Rise of Tiamat campaign.
  • Her lingering awareness of Bowgentle’s work may tie into research concerning the imprisonment or weakening of dragons.
  • Future interactions could allow her redemption — or she could become a powerful undead ally or enemy, depending on the party’s choices.
