Background
Carter makes his living as a pickpocket, working Waterdeep's noble gatherings and social events. He specializes in targeting wealthy patrons, especially nobles who are unlikely to notice missing items in the moment.
During Lady Calera's gala, Carter's professional instincts led him to lift a gold ring engraved with the Cult of the Dragon's symbol from a guest wearing purple - likely a high-ranking cult member known as a "Wearer of the Purple." When Keyleth noticed his nervous behavior and the party pursued him through the streets of Waterdeep, Carter initially fled but was caught using a Web spell.
Upon questioning, Carter revealed the ring and explained it came from someone "wearing purple." Lady Calera identified the likely owner as Lord Valtheran, a minor noble. Impressed by Carter's fortuitous theft and recognizing his potential value, Deez Nuts paid him 20 gold pieces - a sum that stunned the pickpocket - and recruited him as an informant for the Harpers.
