Cloaker

A Cloaker is a predatory aberration resembling a large manta ray or living cloak. These creatures are native to the Underdark and use their natural camouflage to blend perfectly with stone surfaces, dropping on unsuspecting prey from above.

Description

Cloakers are flying aberrations with leathery, wing-like bodies that can wrap around victims like a cloak. When resting on stone ceilings, they are nearly impossible to detect due to their natural camouflage. They unfurl suddenly to attack, using their moaning ability to create phantasmal duplicates that confuse attackers.

Abilities

  • Natural Camouflage - Blends perfectly with stone surfaces when motionless
  • Moaning - Creates phantasmal duplicates that make it difficult to discern which image is the real creature
  • Engulfing Attack - Can wrap around prey like a cloak, suffocating victims

Habitat

Cloakers are typically found in the Underdark, preferring natural cave systems where they can hide on ceilings and ambush prey. They are drawn to areas with regular traffic, as this provides more opportunities for hunting.

Campaign Encounters

Session 45 - The Mind Gobbler

A cloaker attacked Deez Nuts as they moved through the natural tunnels deep in Garmok's Mine. The creature had been using its natural camouflage to blend with the stone ceiling, remaining undetected until it suddenly unfurled and swooped down on Keyleth.

Alexios and Xanphina rushed to protect the ranger, while Shade unleashed eldritch blasts and Karma shifted into a more aggressive form. The cloaker's moaning ability created phantasmal duplicates that confused the party's attacks, but their coordinated strikes eventually brought down the aberration. Xanphina landed powerful blows with Garmok's Flail, while Alexios's radiant smites burned through the creature's unnatural hide.

The encounter served as an ominous warning of what lurked in the depths of Garmok's Mine—aberrations that didn't belong in the natural world, twisted by dark magic or ancient experiments.
