Daran Edermath, Retired Adventurer and Orchard Keeper

Daran Edermath is a silver-haired half-elf and former adventurer who now tends a small apple orchard on the outskirts of Phandalin. Though he appears as a quiet, kind-hearted retiree, his bearing and the glint in his eyes mark him as a man who has seen far more than he lets on.

Background

A former member of the Order of the Gauntlet, Daran served for decades as a wandering knight dedicated to rooting out evil and injustice. In his later years, he settled in Phandalin to live a life of peace — though his sense of duty never faded.

When the adventurers arrived in town during Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin, Daran offered them a quest to investigate strange disturbances at Old Owl Well, promising a reward of 100 gold pieces for their service. His calm manner and disciplined wisdom made him one of the first true mentors the group encountered.

Relationships

Current Status

Alive and residing in his orchard west of Phandalin, Daran remains alert for signs of darkness returning to the North. He acts as both a moral compass and a quiet guardian of the town.

Appearances

Truth: Daran Edermath continues to quietly report to the Order of the Gauntlet and keeps tabs on adventurers who pass through Phandalin. He suspects the disturbances at Old Owl Well may be connected to necromantic activities tied to the Black Spider and, indirectly, to cultists of Tiamat.

Foreshadowing:

  • Daran’s correspondence with other Gauntlet members could make him a liaison for the faction when the party reaches the Rise of Tiamat storyline.
  • His experience and wisdom position him as an ideal figure to encourage cooperation between the Gauntlet and the Harpers.
  • If the Gauntlet fractures under political pressure later in the campaign, Daran might represent its moral core — or sacrifice himself for its unity.
