Derro Merchant Leader
Derro Merchant Leader
The Derro Merchant Leader is a pragmatic dark dwarf trader encountered by Deez Nuts during Session 45. He led a group of Derro merchants exploring the tunnels beneath Garmok's Mine, seeking new trade routes to the surface world.
Description
The Derro Merchant Leader presents as a practical and business-minded individual, dressed in functional Underdark gear. He wears a belt enchanted with slow fall magic—essential equipment for navigating the vertical shafts of the deep Underdark. His demeanor is cautious but fair, showing both the wariness of someone familiar with dangerous realms and the pragmatism of an experienced merchant.
Personality
Despite his admission that "I don't really understand surface dwellers," the Merchant Leader maintains a professional and forgiving attitude toward surface folk. When Deez Nuts attempted to trade him a fake magical bracelet, he chose to assume they had been swindled themselves rather than reacting with hostility. This shows both wisdom and restraint uncommon in tense underground encounters.
He is direct in his negotiations, clearly stating what his people need (unique weapons and tools, or information about trade routes) and what they can offer (mechanical goods and expertise). The Merchant Leader is also protective of his people, readily accepting warnings about dangerous creatures like the Mind Gobbler and adjusting his plans accordingly.
Abilities
- Identify Spell - Can cast magical identification to verify item properties
- Slow Fall Belt - Possesses enchanted equipment for safe vertical travel
- Underdark Knowledge - Expert understanding of deep tunnel systems and their dangers
- Merchant Expertise - Skilled in trade negotiations and evaluating goods
Role
The Merchant Leader serves as the spokesperson and apparent leader for his group of Derro traders. He handles negotiations, makes decisions about routes and trades, and maintains diplomatic relations with surface dwellers his group encounters.
Campaign Involvement
During Session 45, the Merchant Leader and his group encountered Deez Nuts in the tunnels beneath Garmok's Mine. The Derro were seeking a new trade route from their Underdark city to the surface, hoping to avoid the dangerous Myconid territory.
The Merchant Leader offered to sell mechanical goods (gears, chains, oil) and proposed repairing a nearby broken winch system. In exchange, he sought unique weapons, tools, or information about alternative routes—particularly asking about gnomes who seemed able to navigate the area using unknown passages.
When Shade attempted to trade a gold bracelet falsely claimed to help find invisible gnomes, the Merchant Leader cast Identify and discovered the deception. Rather than becoming hostile, he diplomatically suggested the party had been swindled by the "Bronze Blades," giving them the benefit of the doubt.
The party, feeling guilty about the attempted fraud, warned the Merchant Leader that the direction he was heading led straight to the Mind Gobbler's lair—"pretty much certain death." The Merchant Leader thanked them for the information and wisely chose to explore a different direction.
When Alexios tried to negotiate a trade of the warning information for some equipment, the Merchant Leader firmly replied "No," showing his business acumen. The groups parted ways peacefully, with the Derro continuing their search for a viable surface route.
