Mind Gobbler

The Mind Gobbler is a terrifying aberration encountered by Deez Nuts in the deepest levels beneath Garmok's Mine. Created through illithid experiments, this creature combines the psychic abilities of a mind flayer with the monstrous form of a turkey-like beast, earning its name from both its appearance and its bone-chilling gobbling call.

Description

The Mind Gobbler is a massive aberration, comparable in size to a dragon. Its most distinctive features are the writhing tentacles emerging from a beaked, turkey-like head. The creature's thick, reinforced hide is resistant to mundane weapons, and it possesses a powerful mind shield that deflects magical attacks. Its deep, resonant gobble echoes through caverns, serving as both a hunting call and a psychological weapon.

The creature's eyes glow with malevolent intelligence, suggesting the illithid influence in its creation. Its movements are surprisingly swift for its bulk, combining the predatory grace of a turkey with the supernatural fluidity of an aberration.

Abilities

  • Psychic Blast - A devastating area-of-effect attack that can stun multiple opponents simultaneously
  • Tentacle Strike - Powerful melee attacks capable of rendering even armored opponents unconscious
  • Mind Shield - Provides resistance to magical attacks, deflecting or absorbing spell energy
  • Mythic Transformation - At half health, the creature enters a second phase, regenerating wounds and becoming even more dangerous
  • Summon Gobble Thralls - Can create mind-controlled minions called "gobble thralls" that serve and protect it
  • Regeneration - During its mythic phase, the creature can heal significant wounds
  • Psychic Assault - Continuous mental attacks that wear down opponents' resolve

Origins

The Mind Gobbler is believed to be a product of illithid (mind flayer) experimentation. The creature's psychic abilities and aberrant physiology suggest deliberate bio-engineering, possibly as a guardian creature or weapon. Its presence in the depths beneath Garmok's Mine indicates it may have been placed there deliberately or escaped from deeper Underdark facilities.

Campaign Involvement

During Session 45, Deez Nuts encountered this creature in the deepest chambers beneath Garmok's Mine. The battle proved to be one of the party's most challenging encounters.

The combat began with the party attempting a coordinated assault. Alexios declared a Vow of Enmity and charged with divine smite, Xanphina called upon her ancestral spirits, and Shade played his bagpipes to inspire the group. However, the Mind Gobbler's defenses proved formidable, with its thick hide absorbing much of the damage and its mind shield deflecting magical attacks.

As the battle progressed, the creature demonstrated its terrifying power. Its psychic blasts stunned multiple party members, and its tentacle strikes knocked Keyleth unconscious twice during the fight. The party fought valiantly, with Gootcha's sneak attacks finding purchase and Karma shapeshifting between forms to maintain tactical advantages.

The turning point came when the creature activated its mythic transformation at half health. Wounds regenerated, and the Mind Gobbler began summoning gobble thralls—mind-controlled servants that appeared endlessly. Faced with a two-phase boss fight, dwindling resources, and multiple unconscious allies, Shade made the critical decision to retreat.

Karma transformed into a giant spider to carry the unconscious Alexios, while Keyleth cast fog cloud to cover their escape. The party fled through the Myconid Grove, with the Mind Gobbler's gobbling pursuit echoing behind them until they reached the upper levels of the mine.

The Mind Gobbler survived the encounter and remains in the depths of Garmok's Mine, wounded but very much alive—a threat yet to be overcome.

Current Status

The Mind Gobbler remains in its lair deep beneath Garmok's Mine. While wounded from its battle with Deez Nuts, its regenerative abilities and mythic nature suggest it has likely recovered. The creature continues to guard the deepest chambers of the mine, its gobbling calls echoing through the Underdark passages as a warning to any who would venture into its domain.

Lair

The Mind Gobbler dwells in a massive chamber in the deepest levels of Garmok's Mine, far below the Myconid Grove. The lair is accessible only through treacherous Underdark passages and shows signs of illithid architecture, supporting the theory of the creature's artificial origins.
