Escobert the Red
Escobert the Red
- Escobert the Red** is the master of arms and captain of the guard for The Keep (Greenest). A grizzled dwarf with a thick brogue, a booming laugh, and a mane of fiery red hair that earned him his moniker, Escobert is a veteran soldier who has served Governor Nighthill faithfully for over two decades.
Background
Before settling in Greenest, Escobert spent decades working as a caravan guard and mercenary across the Sword Coast. He saw service in the defense of Elturel and later became an instructor for younger warriors before being recruited by Governor Nighthill to organize Greenest’s defense forces.
When the Cult of the Dragon attacked during the Siege of Greenest, Escobert was among the first to take up arms. He directed the defense from the walls of The Keep (Greenest), personally assisting the adventurers in sealing the **sally port** breach and revealing the existence of the **Secret Tunnel** — a route he had long kept under his watch for emergencies.
Relationships
- **Governor Nighthill** – His commanding officer and close friend; Escobert trusts Nighthill’s judgment implicitly.
- **The Adventuring Party** – He sees them as honorary members of Greenest’s guard.
- **Frulam Mondath** – The enemy commander whose tactics he begrudgingly respects.
Current Status
Following the raid, Escobert oversees the reconstruction of Greenest’s walls and trains a new generation of guards. He has also begun fortifying the Secret Tunnel after the adventurers’ use of it revealed its vulnerability.
<details><summary>🧩 DM Notes (Spoilers)</summary>
Truth: Escobert’s knowledge of the Secret Tunnel dates back to his days as a mercenary. The tunnel was once part of a smuggler’s network used to transport stolen relics from the Time of Troubles — some of which were dragon-related artifacts later reclaimed by the cult.
Future Hooks:
- Escobert may later provide intelligence on cult troop movements or coordinate with the Order of the Gauntlet as a field agent.
- His hidden key ring includes one key that does not match any known lock in the Keep — a potential mystery for future discovery.
