The Keep (Greenest)
The Keep (Greenest)
The **Keep of Greenest** is the town’s central fortress and civic heart, serving as both the administrative seat of Governor Nighthill and the community’s final refuge in times of crisis. Constructed of thick limestone and granite quarried from the Greenfields hills, the Keep stands atop a low rise that offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside.
Overview
- **Location:** Center of Greenest, overlooking the Uldoon Trail
- **Built:** Circa 1475 DR
- **Purpose:** Civic hall, military barracks, and emergency shelter
- **Current Status:** Damaged but standing following the 1488 DR Cult of the Dragon raid
During the Siege
When the Cult of the Dragon descended upon Greenest, the Keep became the stronghold for its surviving population. Hundreds of villagers crowded within its walls while Governor Nighthill and his second-in-command, Escobert the Red, coordinated the town’s defense.
The party arrived amid the chaos, fighting their way inside and helping to secure key defensive points — most notably the **sally port**, which had been breached by raiders. With the help of a resourceful villager and a timely use of *Mending*, the party sealed the gate and restored the town’s defenses. From the Keep’s watchtower, they observed **Frulam Mondath**, resplendent in purple robes and wearing a dragon mask, commanding the siege alongside the blue dragon **Lennithon**.
A secret passage beneath the Keep, colloquially known as the **Secret Tunnel**, provided a vital escape route used by the heroes to rescue townsfolk and strike out against cult operations elsewhere in Greenest.

Foreshadowing
The Keep’s survival ensures that Greenest remains a viable stronghold for later resistance movements. Its secret tunnel may see use again in the campaign, potentially as an escape or infiltration route when the Cult of the Dragon returns in greater force.
<details><summary>🧩 DM Notes (Spoilers)</summary>
Truth: The Secret Tunnel predates the Keep, built originally by smugglers who trafficked relics from the Time of Troubles. Escobert the Red learned of it while serving as a mercenary decades prior.
Future Hooks:
- The Keep’s reconstruction may be supported by the Order of the Gauntlet or Emerald Enclave.
- The Secret Tunnel may later lead to forgotten catacombs or buried cult caches.
