Myconid Colony
Myconid Colony
The Myconid Colony is a peaceful community of myconids living in a bioluminescent fungal cavern beneath Garmok's Mine, deep in the Underdark.
Overview
The colony inhabits a spectacular cavern filled with glowing fungi that emit soft, multicolored bioluminescence, creating a gentle, colorful illumination throughout their home. The myconids have carefully cultivated various types of fungi throughout their grove, creating a thriving ecosystem that sustains the colony while also providing defense mechanisms.
The colony is organized as a peaceful, communal society led by the Myconid Sovereign, the largest and oldest member. Members communicate through rapport spores, allowing telepathic connection and shared emotions throughout the colony. This creates a deeply interconnected community where feelings and experiences can be shared instantaneously.
Location
The colony's cavern is located in the Underdark beneath Garmok's Mine, accessed through passages that wind deeper into the earth from the ancient dwarven complex. The cavern serves as a natural waypoint between the surface regions and deeper Underdark territories, which has proven both advantageous and dangerous for the colony.
The grove features:
- Bioluminescent fungi providing natural, colorful lighting
- Shriekers strategically placed as an alarm system
- Violet fungus positioned for defense
- Cultivated mushroom patches for sustenance
- Protected areas for young sprouts to grow safely
History
For an extended period, the colony lived peacefully in their underground grove, tending their fungi and raising generations of young sprouts. The myconids maintained their isolated existence, rarely encountering surface dwellers or other Underdark denizens.
This tranquility was violently disrupted when Voaraghamanthar, a powerful black dragon, discovered their cavern and began using it as a passage to deeper Underdark regions. The dragon showed no regard for the peaceful fungal folk, destroying portions of their grove and killing many adult myconids and young sprouts during his repeated passages. The colony lived in terror, unable to stop the dragon's intrusions or safely relocate their vulnerable young.
The trauma of these attacks affected the entire colony through their shared telepathic network. The Myconid Sovereign carried the burden of these memories, feeling the loss of each colony member deeply.
Current Situation
After Deez Nuts slew Voaraghamanthar in Session 44, the colony's immediate threat ended. When the party explored deeper into the mine and discovered the grove, the Sovereign welcomed them as heroes and friends. Through rapport spores, the party experienced the colony's traumatic memories and their profound relief at the dragon's death.
However, the colony faces an ongoing problem: their cavern remains a natural thoroughfare to the Underdark. Creatures from the deep—raiders, traders, and other dangerous beings—regularly pass through their peaceful home, forcing the myconids to maintain constant vigilance. The Sovereign requested help from Deez Nuts to find an alternate route that would allow the colony to seal their entrance and finally live in peace.
The party promised to investigate and help secure the colony's future, cementing an alliance between the myconids and the adventurers.
Members
- Myconid Sovereign - Leader of the colony, largest and oldest member
- Adult Myconids - Full members of the community who tend the fungal groves
- Young Sprouts - Immature myconids, carefully protected by the entire colony
The Sovereign proudly presented the young sprouts to the party as a gesture of trust and celebration upon learning of Voaraghamanthar's death—a significant honor in myconid culture.
Defenses
Despite their peaceful nature, the colony has established defensive measures:
- Shriekers - Fungal alarm system that emits piercing sounds when disturbed by movement or light, alerting the colony to intruders
- Violet Fungus - Carnivorous fungi with poisonous tendrils, strategically positioned throughout the grove
- Rapport Spore Network - Early warning system through the fungal network, allowing rapid communication of threats
- Collective Defense - When threatened, adult myconids can coordinate their defense through telepathic communication
The Sovereign warned Deez Nuts about the shriekers, ensuring they knew to avoid disturbing these alarm fungi during their passage through the grove.
Relationship with Deez Nuts
The colony's relationship with the party evolved from cautious curiosity to deep friendship:
When Shade scouted ahead with her Warlock Eye ability, she discovered the glowing fungal cavern. The party approached cautiously, unsure if the strange fungal creatures were hostile. The Sovereign came forward peacefully and released rapport spores, enabling telepathic communication.
Through this connection, Karma explained the party's quest to stop the Cult of the Dragon from raising Tiamat. When Voaraghamanthar was mentioned, the party experienced the colony's trauma through shared memories. Upon learning the party had killed the dragon, the Sovereign's joy resonated throughout the entire colony through the spore network.
The Sovereign invited the party to see the young sprouts—an unprecedented honor—demonstrating the depth of trust and gratitude the colony felt toward their new allies. The party's promise to help find an alternate route to the Underdark has established an ongoing alliance.
