Myconid Sovereign
Myconid Sovereign
The Myconid Sovereign is the leader of the Myconid Colony encountered by Deez Nuts beneath Garmok's Mine. As the largest and oldest myconid in the colony, the Sovereign serves as protector, guide, and voice of their people.
Description
The Sovereign is visibly larger than other myconids in the colony, marking his status and age. Like all myconids, he communicates through rapport spores rather than speech, releasing clouds of spores that enable telepathic connection with others. His presence radiates authority tempered with gentle wisdom.
Background
The Sovereign leads a peaceful colony of myconids in a bioluminescent fungal cavern deep in the Underdark, accessible through passages beneath Garmok's Mine. For years, the colony lived quietly, tending their fungal groves and raising young sprouts in relative safety.
This peace was shattered when Voaraghamanthar, a powerful black dragon, discovered the colony's cave and began using it as a thoroughfare to deeper Underdark regions. The dragon's repeated intrusions brought violence and death to the colony. Voaraghamanthar destroyed portions of the grove and killed many myconid adults and children, traumatizing the entire colony. The Sovereign and his people lived in constant fear, unable to stop the dragon or relocate their vulnerable young.
Personality
Through rapport spores, the Sovereign communicates in feelings, memories, and impressions rather than words. His emotional depth is immediately apparent to those who connect with him telepathically:
- Protective - Deeply concerned for the safety of the colony, especially the young sprouts
- Traumatized - Carries painful memories of the dragon's attacks and the loss of colony members
- Hopeful - Despite hardship, maintains hope for peace and safety
- Welcoming - Once trust is established, shows genuine warmth and hospitality
- Wise - Makes measured decisions and seeks peaceful solutions
When sharing the memory of Voaraghamanthar's attacks, the party experienced the Sovereign's profound sorrow and helplessness. When learning of the dragon's death, his joy and relief washed over them in waves through the telepathic connection.
Role in Campaign
When Deez Nuts explored beneath Garmok's Mine, Shade used her Warlock Eye ability to scout ahead and discovered the myconid grove. The party approached cautiously, and the Sovereign came forward to meet them peacefully. He released rapport spores over the group, establishing telepathic communication.
Through this connection, the Sovereign asked who they were and why they had come. Karma explained they were on a quest to stop the Cult of the Dragon from raising Tiamat. When the party mentioned Voaraghamanthar, the Sovereign visibly shuddered, and the party experienced his traumatic memories of the dragon's attacks through the telepathic link.
The party shared the news that they had slain Voaraghamanthar in the previous session. The Sovereign was overcome with joy and relief. He immediately released more spores throughout the cavern to share this news with the entire colony. As a gesture of trust and celebration, he proudly presented the young myconid sprouts to the party, inviting them to see the colony's children—a significant honor in myconid culture.
The Sovereign then shared the colony's ongoing problem: their cavern serves as a natural passage between the surface and the deeper Underdark, making them vulnerable to constant intrusions from raiders, traders, and other dangerous creatures. The myconids wish only to be left alone but lack the means to reroute traffic or seal their cave. The party promised to help find an alternate route, cementing their alliance with the colony.
Before the party departed deeper into the Underdark, the Sovereign warned them about the shrieker fungi throughout the grove, explaining they serve as an alarm system. He mentioned that others deeper in the tunnels might know more about the region and could provide additional information.

Current Status
The Sovereign remains with the colony beneath Garmok's Mine, hoping that Deez Nuts will find a way to reroute Underdark traffic and allow the myconids to finally live in peace. With Voaraghamanthar dead, the immediate threat has ended, but the colony remains vulnerable to other dangers from the deep.
