An orc guard captain of The Skarhald Clan who was stationed at a fortified road gate between Waterdeep and the Mere of Dead Men.
Background
Member of The Skarhald Clan, this orc served as captain of a guard post on the road north of Waterdeep. Despite the fearsome reputation of orcs, he displayed a friendly demeanor toward travelers and possessed deep knowledge of his clan's history and legendary heroes.
First Encounter (Session 42)
When Deez Nuts traveled north through orc lands in Session 42, they encountered the captain at his fortified road gate. His tusks gleaming in the morning sun, he looked Xanphina over with interest and, in a rare show of openness, shared the tale of Garmok the Chainbearer—a hero of The Skarhald Clan.
The captain recited a traditional orc poem about Garmok and the cursed mine:
"He walked the mire with links unbound,
Where fen breathes rot without a sound.
He freed the scaled, but devils lied—
A door to hell, and he inside."
He warned the party that the mine still festers with evil and suggested that a clan near Silverymoon might hold more stories of the orc champions.
Death (Session 43)
Between Sessions 42 and 43, the guard post was attacked by Cult of the Dragon forces. When Deez Nuts returned to the area, they found the orcs lying dead alongside cultist bodies. The guard captain's body was tied to a chair, showing clear signs of torture before he was mercifully killed.
Shade performed her spirit communion ritual (while naked, as the ritual demands) to speak with the captain's spirit. The spirit returned to his tortured body and revealed the horrifying truth: he had been interrogated by cultists seeking information about Deez Nuts. Under extreme torture, he broke and revealed that Xanphina was searching for Garmok's Mine and seeking information about her other ancestors.
This intelligence allowed the cultists to set up an ambush at Garmok's Mine, directly endangering the party.
