Taern "Thunderspells" Hornblade is a renowned archmage who formerly held the position of High Mage of Silverymoon, one of the most magically sophisticated cities in Faerûn. His epithet "Thunderspells" speaks to his specialty in evocation magic and his preference for devastating combat spells.

As a representative of Silverymoon and the mages of the Silver Marches, Taern brings considerable magical expertise to the council. While Leosin Erlanthar noted that Taern can be "pretentious," there is no denying that "the mages can bring great power to the fight" against the dragon cult.

During the Council of Waterdeep meeting where Deez Nuts presented their findings, Taern was particularly troubled by the revelation that the Red Wizards of Thay were involved in the cult's efforts to bring Tiamat back from her prison in Avernus. The party's report about Rath Modar and Rezmir both being resurrected raised serious concerns about the scope of the cult's magical capabilities and their connections to Thay.
