The Nothic, Twisted Guardian Beneath Tresendar Manor

The **Nothic** is a warped, one-eyed creature that lurks in the depths of the Redbrand Hideout beneath Tresendar Manor. Once a scholar of arcane lore, it was transformed into a monstrous aberration through dark magic — cursed with eternal hunger for secrets and knowledge.

Overview

The adventurers first heard rumors of a strange presence beneath the manor in Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin. When encountered, the Nothic communicates telepathically, its voice slithering into the minds of intruders with cryptic whispers and riddles.

Its single green eye glows faintly in the dark, reflecting a cunning intelligence twisted by madness. Though driven by hunger for flesh and secrets, it occasionally bargains with mortals — especially those who promise it new knowledge.

Behavior

The Nothic stalks intruders silently, preferring to manipulate and observe before striking. It may trade information about Glasstaff and the Redbrands in exchange for magical trinkets or forbidden lore.

Despite its monstrous form, remnants of its former intellect remain — a tragic echo of what it once was.

Origins

According to Glasstaff’s journals, the Nothic was once a wizard who delved too deeply into forbidden arcana tied to the Phandelver Pact and ancient draconic runes found beneath the manor. Glasstaff’s experiments and exposure to corrupted ley magic from Wave Echo Cave completed its transformation.

Current Status

Alive, though severely deranged. The Nothic remains bound to the depths of the hideout, unable to leave due to the lingering wards that anchor it there.

Truth: The Nothic’s transformation was catalyzed by exposure to corrupted arcane energy once channeled through the Tresendar crypts — energy tied to ancient draconic ley lines that connect Wave Echo Cave to other dormant sites across the Sword Coast.

Its body mutates further each time it consumes magical knowledge, subtly aligning its essence with the same draconic resonance the Cult of the Dragon later seeks to weaponize.

Foreshadowing:

  • The Nothic’s condition mirrors the fate of mortals who meddle with dragon-forged magic, a theme central to Rise of Tiamat.
  • If spared, it may later resurface as a tragic informant, its fragmented mind recalling names or sigils linked to the Cult.
  • Study of its remains or writings could grant the party clues about how draconic essence corrupts mortal forms.
