Thundertree

Thundertree, the Ruined Village Near Neverwinter Wood

Thundertree is a ruined village standing on the edge of the Neverwinter Wood, northeast of Neverwinter. Once a prosperous logging and farming community, it was destroyed decades ago when the eruption of Mount Hotenow blanketed the region in ash and drove its survivors away. In the years since, nature — and darker things — have reclaimed its ruins.

Overview

The adventurers first heard of Thundertree in Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin, when Qelline Alderleaf recommended her old friend Reidoth, a druid who had taken up residence there. The village, shrouded in creeping vegetation and roamed by the undead, is both a place of peril and potential knowledge.

The overgrown cottages, crumbling towers, and ruined gardens whisper of a lost past. Yet amid the decay, new dangers lurk — from ash zombies to territorial beasts and the occasional would-be treasure hunter seeking old relics of Neverwinter’s reach.

Notable Locations

  • **Druid’s Cottage** – The overgrown home of Reidoth, who watches over the balance of the land.
  • **Old Tower Ruins** – A crumbling tower occupied by a dangerous new resident — the young green dragon Venomfang.
  • **Overgrown Pathways** – Choked with ash and thorns; remnants of the eruption’s devastation still linger here.

Faction Influence

Current Status

Largely abandoned and dangerous. The presence of Venomfang and spreading blight makes Thundertree a point of great concern for the Emerald Enclave and any adventurers passing through.

Truth: Thundertree is a nexus of natural corruption and draconic power. Venomfang, a young green dragon, has made its lair in the ruined tower, and the Cult of the Dragon has begun sending emissaries to court it as an ally. Reidoth remains unaware of their full intentions but senses the imbalance spreading from the site.

Foreshadowing:

  • Thundertree foreshadows the draconic alliances and corruption that dominate Rise of Tiamat.
  • Venomfang may become a recurring character — ally, rival, or threat — depending on the party’s actions.
  • The Emerald Enclave’s concern with Thundertree’s blight can serve as a prelude to their role in the global struggle against the Cult.
