Ulder Ravengard
Marshal Ulder Ravengard commands the military of Baldur's Gate and sits on the Council of Waterdeep as his city's representative. He became a direct patron of Deez Nuts in Session 52.
Description
A working commander rather than a courtier. The party found him in a private room at the Honorable Knight in Waterdeep, papers spread over a map of the whole region, writing. He is direct, unceremonious, and openly delighted by competence: "Ha! Welcome back, Deez Nuts. I was wondering when we'd hear from you. Have a seat, have a seat."
Session 52 — the fort, and the hunt
Ravengard had heard through the grapevine that Arauthator, Old White Death, was dead, and wanted it from the source. Gootcha: "I mean, it required us to go to hell and back, but yes, that was us." His reply — "Whoa, that's quite the story. Sounds like you're gonna fit right in" — turned out to be a setup.
He brought three things to the table:
- The fort. High Overseer Thavius Kreeg of Elturel wants an old choke-point outpost on the eastern road renovated against Cult incursions, and Ravengard handed it to Deez Nuts outright — "ownership or lordship." The fort was the home of the Hellriders of Elturel, who once opened a portal and rode into Hell to fight the devils back. His pitch to a party that had recently done exactly that: "So if you've been to Hell and back, you're going to fit right in." The party named it Nuts Deep.
- Varram the White. The high Wyrmspeaker is moving in the northeast — "Not certain what she's doing. But we think if you can go and track her down, that'll be a pretty big blow against the cult." He places Varram at Rezmir's rank, "just below their main leader." (Varram is a woman in this campaign — a DM change from the published module.)
- The alliance. Seeing Maccath the Crimson with the party, he took the Arcane Brotherhood's support as read: "That's great. We need all the help we can get. The cult is starting to get more and more powerful."
He was explicit that the party are not to be garrison troops but a mobile strike force, and stood them fresh horses in Baldur's Gate for the ride east.
