Myconid

Myconids are intelligent, peaceful fungal creatures native to the Underdark. These ambulatory mushroom people communicate through spores and live in colonies led by a sovereign.

Overview

Myconids are sentient fungi that walk on two legs and communicate telepathically through rapport spores. They are generally peaceful and prefer to be left alone, living in bioluminescent fungal groves deep underground. Myconid colonies are organized communities with a clear hierarchy, led by the largest and oldest member known as the Myconid Sovereign.

Unlike most creatures, myconids do not use spoken language. Instead, they release clouds of rapport spores that enable telepathic communication, conveying emotions, memories, and imagery rather than words. This form of communication allows others to experience the myconid's thoughts and feelings directly, creating an intimate and intuitive connection.

Abilities

  • Rapport Spores - Allow telepathic communication between myconids and other creatures, conveying emotions and imagery rather than words. Those affected can sense thoughts, feelings, and memories as intuitive concepts.
  • Bioluminescence - Many myconids and their cultivated fungi emit a soft, natural glow in various colors, providing gentle illumination in their underground homes.
  • Fungal Cultivation - Myconids tend to various species of fungi, creating symbiotic relationships with their fungal environment.

Ecology

Myconids cultivate various types of fungi for sustenance and defense, including:

  • Shriekers - Alarm fungi that emit piercing sounds when disturbed by movement or light, serving as an early warning system
  • Violet Fungus - Carnivorous fungi with poisonous tendrils, used for colony defense
  • Young Sprouts - Immature myconids, small and developing, carefully protected by the colony

Myconid colonies establish themselves in caves and caverns throughout the Underdark, preferring areas with natural moisture and minimal traffic from other Underdark denizens.

Behavior

Myconids are inherently peaceful and non-aggressive, preferring isolation and tranquility. They will defend themselves if threatened but generally avoid conflict. They form tight-knit communities centered around their Sovereign, working together to maintain their fungal groves and protect their young.

When hostile creatures repeatedly intrude upon their territory, myconids will attempt to defend themselves or relocate if possible. They value safety and stability above all else.

Campaign Involvement

The party encountered a Myconid Colony beneath Garmok's Mine while exploring the Underdark. The colony had been traumatized by Voaraghamanthar, a black dragon, repeatedly using their cave as a thoroughfare to deeper Underdark regions. The dragon's attacks killed many adult myconids and young sprouts, leaving the colony in fear.

After learning the party had slain the dragon, the Myconid Sovereign welcomed them as friends and allies. Through rapport spores, the party experienced the colony's trauma and relief directly. The Sovereign requested help finding an alternate route to the Underdark so the colony could seal their cave and live in peace.

Shade was the first to discover the colony, using her Warlock Eye ability to scout ahead. The party approached peacefully, and Karma explained their quest to stop the Cult of the Dragon from raising Tiamat.
