The Skarhald Clan

An orcish clan that controls territory along the roads north of Waterdeep, particularly in the regions approaching the Mere of Dead Men.

Overview

The Skarhald Clan represents a more organized and civilized faction of orcs than the stereotypical raiders common in the Sword Coast. They maintain fortified positions along major trade routes and have developed a reputation for being willing to parley with travelers rather than immediately attacking.

The clan's name and culture center around their legendary heroes, particularly Garmok the Chainbearer, whose story has been passed down through generations in oral tradition and poetry.

Territory

The Skarhald Clan controls at least one fortified road gate between Waterdeep and the Mere of Dead Men. This strategic position allows them to:

  • Monitor traffic through their lands
  • Collect tolls or tributes from merchants
  • Provide warnings about regional dangers
  • Maintain defensive positions against threats

Relations with Others

Deez Nuts: The clan had a friendly, if cautious, relationship with the adventuring party. The Orc Guard Captain showed openness toward the group in Session 42, particularly taking interest in Xanphina's orcish heritage. He freely shared clan lore and warnings about Garmok's Mine.

Cult of the Dragon: Between Sessions 42 and 43, cultist forces massacred the clan's guard post, torturing the captain for information before killing him and his warriors. This attack represents a significant blow to clan security and honor.

Notable Members

  • Orc Guard Captain – Guard captain of the northern road post (deceased, killed by cultists)
  • Various guards and warriors stationed at the fortified road gate

Legendary Heroes

Cultural Elements

Oral Tradition: The clan maintains detailed oral histories of their heroes, passed down through poetry and song. The tale of Garmok the Chainbearer serves as both heroic legend and cautionary tale about the dangers lurking in the Mere of Dead Men.

Attitude Toward Outsiders: Unlike many orc clans, The Skarhald Clan demonstrates a willingness to engage peacefully with travelers, sharing information and warnings rather than immediately resorting to violence. This pragmatism may stem from their strategic position on trade routes.

Recent Events

Session 42: Deez Nuts passed through Skarhald territory peacefully. The guard captain shared the legend of Garmok and warned about the continuing evil at the mine.

Between Sessions 42-43: Cult of the Dragon forces attacked the guard post, seeking information about Deez Nuts' movements. The guard captain was tortured and killed, along with his warriors.

Session 43: Shade performed spirit communion with the fallen captain's spirit, learning that he had revealed information about Xanphina's quest under torture. This intelligence allowed cultists to ambush the party at Garmok's Mine.

Current Status

The clan's northern guard post has been destroyed, with all defenders killed. The clan's response to this attack and whether they will seek vengeance against the Cult of the Dragon remains unknown.
