Carp Alderleaf, Curious Halfling Youth of Phandalin

Carp Alderleaf is a spirited halfling boy from Phandalin, known for his endless curiosity and tendency to wander into trouble. The son of Qelline Alderleaf, he lives on Alderleaf Farm at the town’s edge and dreams of becoming an adventurer like the heroes who pass through town.

Background

Carp was first mentioned in Session 03 – Welcome to Phandalin when he told the party about a hidden tunnel leading beneath Tresendar Manor — the presumed hideout of the Redbrands. His discovery provided a critical lead in uncovering the gang’s operations.

Though young, Carp’s bravery and inquisitiveness have made him a local legend in miniature. He idolizes the adventurers and often pretends to be one himself, wielding a wooden sword and boasting about his “secret missions.”

Relationships

  • Qelline Alderleaf – His mother, a halfling farmer and friend to the adventurers.
  • Phandalin – His home and playground; the source of most of his adventures.
  • Tresendar Manor – The site of his most famous discovery.

Current Status

Alive and well in Phandalin, likely grounded after revealing the Redbrands’ secret tunnel. Continues to shadow adventurers and dream of heroism.

Truth: Carp’s discovery of the tunnel put him briefly on the Redbrands’ radar, though they underestimated him. His family remains under quiet observation by the Zhentarim through local informants connected to the Phandalin Miners’ Exchange.

Foreshadowing:

  • Carp could later become an apprentice to one of the player characters or a messenger for the Harpers or Order of the Gauntlet.
  • If revisited during Rise of Tiamat, an older Carp may serve as a young scout or courier aiding the party’s network.
  • His natural curiosity could foreshadow future encounters with dangerous knowledge or magical relics hidden around Phandalin.
