Cragmaw Hideout, Goblin Den Along the Triboar Trail

Cragmaw Hideout is a small goblin lair hidden along the Triboar Trail, nestled within a steep ravine marked by dense thickets and a narrow cave entrance. It serves as an outpost of the Cragmaw Tribe — a minor stronghold for raiders and scouts loyal to King Grol of Cragmaw Castle.

Overview

The adventurers discovered the hideout in Session 01 – The Road to Phandalin, following goblin tracks from the ambush site of Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter. Inside, they encountered traps, goblin sentries, and the self-proclaimed “Regional Manager,” Yeemik, who held Sildar hostage.

The cave’s interior features a fast-running stream, narrow ledges, and natural bridges — hazards that the goblins have turned into defensive advantages. It also once housed Yeemik’s pet carrion crawler, Bruce, who was slain in the ensuing chaos.

Notable Areas

  • **Main Cavern:** The site of the confrontation with Yeemik and his goblin underlings.
  • **Water Channel:** A controlled stream that the goblins used to flood intruders.
  • **Wolf Den:** Once home to half-starved wolves kept as guards.
  • **Collapsed Passage:** A narrow route leading deeper into the hill, possibly connecting to old dwarven workings or tunnels forgotten by the goblins.

Faction Influence

The hideout serves as a forward outpost of the Cragmaw Tribe, who operate under King Grol from Cragmaw Castle. Their orders originate indirectly from the mysterious Black Spider.

Current Status

After the party’s battle in Session 02 – The Goblin Lair Negotiations, the hideout was left abandoned. Most of the goblins were slain, and the survivors fled into the wilds. The cave’s upper chambers may still conceal forgotten tunnels or scavenged loot.

Truth: Cragmaw Hideout was not chosen at random. The location sits above old dwarven passages once connected to the mines beneath the Sword Mountains. The Black Spider learned of these tunnels from ancient maps recovered from Wave Echo Cave, and he seeded goblin outposts along them to monitor potential adventurer movements.

Foreshadowing:

  • The goblins’ use of strategic ambushes and organization hints at outside coordination — an early ripple of the Cult of the Dragon’s growing influence.
  • The hidden tunnels below could later be used as fast-travel or smuggling routes by Zhentarim or cult agents during Rise of Tiamat.
  • If the party revisits the cave, they may find it reoccupied by agents aligned with either the Zhentarim or the cult, investigating relics linked to dwarven forges.
