Gundren Rockseeker, Dwarven Prospector

Stocky, determined, and always carrying the scent of old ale and new opportunity, Gundren Rockseeker is a dwarven prospector whose enthusiasm for discovery is matched only by his knack for secrecy.

Background

Gundren Rockseeker is one of the three Rockseeker brothers — dwarves who recently rediscovered the location of the legendary Wave Echo Cave, an ancient mine said to contain powerful magical forges and a source of great wealth.

In Session 01 – The Road to Phandalin, Gundren hired the adventurers to escort a wagon of supplies to Phandalin while he and Sildar Hallwinter rode ahead. En route, Gundren and Sildar were ambushed by goblins near the Triboar Trail, leading to Gundren's capture and disappearance.

Known for his charisma and dwarven stubbornness, Gundren has earned a reputation as a skilled prospector, amateur historian, and occasional trivia host — a nod to his colorful personality before his kidnapping.

In Session 04 – Fire and Faith at Cragmaw Castle, the party continued their search for Gundren at Cragmaw Castle.

In Session 09 – Wave Echo Cave: The Depths Awaken, Gundren was found drinking in despair outside Wave Echo Cave. One of his brothers was dead, the other missing, and the horrors within the mine had left him hollow. Disheartened, he stayed behind, choosing whiskey over heroism.

Post-Wave Echo Cave

After recovering from his trauma and grief, Gundren and his surviving brother Nundro Rockseeker took control of the Forge of Spells within Wave Echo Cave. They have since been using the ancient dwarven forge to create magic items.

Note: The unprocessed file mentions "Thurmin" and "Nundro" as current owners of the Forge. "Thurmin" appears to be an error or alternate name for either Gundren or Tharden Rockseeker. Since Tharden was mentioned as dead in Session 09, it's likely that Gundren and Nundro are the current operators, with "Thurmin" being a nickname or transcription error for Gundren.

Truth: Gundren was held in Cragmaw Castle by King Grol, who intended to ransom him to the Black Spider — a drow agent seeking control of Wave Echo Cave.

Current Situation (Post-Wave Echo Cave):

• Gundren and Nundro have successfully taken control of the Forge of Spells
• They are creating magic items using the ancient dwarven forge
• They refuse to do business with Halia Thornton and the Zhentarim
• Gundren is concerned that Halia may learn of the Forge and attempt to gain control of it with force

Secret Guardian:

• Gundren and Nundro have enlisted the support of Venomfang, a green dragon, to guard the Forge of Spells
• In exchange, they add magic items to Venomfang's hoard
• This creates a dangerous alliance that could complicate any attempts to access or control the Forge
• The party may not know about this arrangement

Connection to Dragon Cult Plot:

• The Cult of the Dragon has heard of "fantastic magic items coming out of the Phandalin region"
• They don't know the specific source (the Forge of Spells)
• They have been attacking Halia Thornton's smuggling waypoints looking for these items
• The items they seek are actually from Gundren and Nundro's forge, not from Halia's network
• This means innocent people in Halia's network are being killed by Dragon Cultists searching for the wrong supplier

Gundren's Dilemma:

• He has heard of the killings along Halia's smuggling routes
• He wants the killings to stop
• He would consider working with Halia to prevent further deaths
• However, he fears she would discover the Forge of Spells and try to take it by force
• He's caught between his conscience and his paranoia

Foreshadowing:

• The Black Spider's connection to the Cult of the Dragon can serve as a narrative bridge to Rise of Tiamat, with the spider's agents supplying relics or dragon lore to the cult.
• Gundren's Forge of Spells is capable of crafting powerful magic items that could be used against dragons—or added to Tiamat's hoard
• The alliance with Venomfang creates a complex situation if the party learns about it
• If rescued, Gundren may later serve as a Harpers ally or resource for locating dragon hoards.
