Maccath the Crimson

Maccath the Crimson is a tiefling sorcerer of the Arcane Brotherhood, widely recognized as the world's foremost expert on dragons and the Draakhorn. Missing for years in the Sea of Moving Ice, she was found imprisoned in Arauthator's lair and freed by Deez Nuts, and has since become one of the party's most valuable — and most morally clear-eyed — allies.

Description

A tiefling bearing the distinctive features of her infernal heritage, with decades of research into dragon behavior, physiology, and ancient dragon artifacts behind her. She earned her place in the Arcane Brotherhood through groundbreaking work on draconic magic.

Role in Campaign

• Session 43 - The Council of Waterdeep — the Council of Waterdeep tasked the party with finding her (Find Maccath the Crimson).
• Session 47 - The Sea of Moving Ice — the party searched for her; multiple sources confirmed she was seen heading toward Arauthator's lair.
• Session 48 - Inside Oyaviggaton (2026.04.12) — found imprisoned in Arauthator's lair; provided intelligence on the Draakhorn (confirming it lies at the Well of Dragons) and equipment to fight the dragon.
• Session 50 - Reforged in Hell, the Voyage Home (2026-06-14) — confirmed Arauthator's death, took charge of Marfulb's research for publication, and warned that Tiamat is moving to return to the world.

Session 51 — the debrief and the red-coin analysis (2026-06-28)

Returned at last to the Host Tower of the Arcane, Maccath delivered her full debrief: Arauthator had not abducted her to kill her, but to audition her as a replacement companion for his mate — a second white dragon, still alive in the north, driven insane by the death of her own tiefling wizard companion. Maccath stalled the dragon by researching — dragons, Arauthator, the Cult of the Dragon's plan to bring back Tiamat, and a great deal about the Draakhorn, which she studied at length — until the party freed her.

She was the only senior figure at the tower untouched by the blood-red coin corruption, and her analysis cracked the crisis: the coins are not magical (Detect Magic, Identify, and Dispel Magic show nothing) but are saturated with raw infernal energy from decades beside the open rift beneath Garmok's Mine — blazing to Detect Evil and Good. Her crucial insight: "it's actually the form that is being imbued, as opposed to the material itself" — change the form, release the energy. That principle became the cure: melting the coins with cumulative 3rd-level magical fire.

Looking over the party's ice-hunter disguises and Shade's habit of testing Vampiric Touch on pirates, she also delivered a quiet warning: "You may want to meet with a priest when you have the chance, because you do seem to be going down a path of evil as well."

She will stay at the Host Tower a few days to write up her dragon and Draakhorn research, then travel to Waterdeep to brief the Council — the party may escort her. She has also taken on researching the Prophecy of the Thorn-Born Star for Gootcha.
