Find Varram the White
The Council of Waterdeep has assigned Deez Nuts to locate Varram the White, a Wyrmspeaker of the Cult of the Dragon who has apparently lost the White Dragon Mask. Intelligence from the Harpers indicates that Varram is searching for the mask covertly, trying to conceal its loss from the rest of the Cult. Recovering the White Dragon Mask before Varram does would remove a critical resource from the Cult's ritual to summon Tiamat.
About Varram the White
Varram the White is a dwarven Cult of the Dragon Wyrmspeaker, one of five high-ranking cultists each entrusted with a dragon mask. As Wyrmspeaker of white dragons, Varram wielded the White Dragon Mask—until she lost it, sparking a desperate secret quest to recover it before the cult leadership discovers her failure.
Appearance and Personality: Varram is a dwarf of considerable ambition but questionable competence. Her position as Wyrmspeaker came more from political maneuvering within the cult than from actual strategic brilliance. Now, the loss of her dragon mask has exposed her inadequacy and left her in a precarious position.
The Lost Mask: The White Dragon Mask is one of five ancient artifacts the Cult of the Dragon seeks to unite. Each mask grants its wearer significant power over dragons of that color. Varram's loss of such a crucial artifact represents a catastrophic failure that could cost her not just her position, but her life.
Current Situation: Rather than report her failure to cult leadership (which would likely result in execution), Varram is conducting a covert search for the mask. She's operating with minimal resources, trying to recover the artifact before Severin or the other Wyrmspeakers discover what happened.
At Boareskyr Bridge she has become a local legend: "Varram, the hero of Boareskyr Bridge." Weeks before the party arrived (Session 54), the dwarf in purple robes was drinking in the inn when a hooded Yuan-ti spy approached her table — she stabbed him through the eye without ever seeing his face, her entourage cut down the rest of his clutch outside, and the bodies were staked ten feet high at the town's edge. She then rode northeast with her escort, toward the Serpent Hills. The crossing toasts her name; nobody there knows what she is.
The serpents caught her. A yuan-ti tracker found dead on her trail — throat slit — carried a drawing of Varram sewn into secret pockets in its own flesh: round dwarf face, purple robes. Then, in Session 55, Baelgrum's Scrying found her: tied to a chair in a windowless prison cell, tortured with blade and poison by a serpent-bodied yuan-ti priest, other yuan-ti around her, bargaining for her life — "Great wealth will be yours if you just free me." Where the cell is, the vision did not say. Why the yuan-ti want her is still unknown.
Her company marches on without her. The fast-moving band the party is tracking keeps Tiamat's rites at its campsites, and the scorched rings where its members slept unmasked prove the clawed "mercenaries" are devils of the Nine Hells. Somebody on this same road is also digging up graves and rifling only mask-sized hiding places, coin left untouched.
Strategic Value: Finding Varram offers multiple advantages:
- Recover the White Dragon Mask - Preventing the cult from reuniting all five masks
- Interrogate a Wyrmspeaker - High-level intelligence about cult operations and plans
- Exploit internal weakness - Varram's desperation makes her vulnerable to pressure
- Disrupt cult hierarchy - Removing a Wyrmspeaker weakens cult leadership
- Learn mask locations - She may know where other masks are or how to find them
Personality Under Pressure: Varram's desperation makes her dangerous and unpredictable. She may attempt negotiation, violence, or deception depending on circumstances. However, her fear of cult retribution could also make her willing to cooperate if offered protection or a way out — and as a prisoner under torture, she is already offering wealth to anyone who will free her.
Quest Giver
Specifically mentioned by:
- Ramalia Haventree of the Harpers
- Lady Dalla Silmerhelm of Waterdeep
- Marshal Ulder Ravengard of Baldur's Gate (re-tasked the party in Session 52)
Objective
Track down Varram the White and recover the White Dragon Mask before she can retrieve it. The Harpers spy network has discovered that:
- Varram has lost the White Dragon Mask
- She is searching for it covertly, attempting to hide its loss from other Cult leaders
- Varram was last seen at Boareskr Bridge
Recovering the White Dragon Mask would prevent the Cult from using it in their ritual and remove significant power from their arsenal. The Council is uncertain how many dragon masks the Cult needs for the ritual to summon Tiamat, but removing even one should disrupt their plans.
Locations Involved
- Boareskr Bridge - Varram's last confirmed location — reached by the party in Session 54
- The Winding Water northeast of the bridge — her trail, followed through Sessions 54–55
- The Serpent Hills — the trail now runs dead north into them
- The ruined town and ancient mage's tomb below cave-pocked bluffs — where the trail (and Session 55) ended, with a cold cultist-and-devil camp and seven fresh graves
- Varram's cell — a windowless yuan-ti prison, location unknown (a settlement the party bypassed east of the trail is one suspect)
- Unknown location of the White Dragon Mask
Factions Involved
- Council of Waterdeep - Quest givers and sponsors
- Harpers - Intelligence network tracking Varram's movements
- Cult of the Dragon - The enemy organization; Varram is one of their Wyrmspeakers, and her company keeps Tiamat's rites
- The Yuan-ti of the Serpent Hills - hunted Varram by name and face, and now hold her, for unknown reasons
- Devils of the Nine Hells - marching in Varram's company as its cloaked "mercenaries"
Progress
Active — in pursuit, less than a day behind. Quest assigned by the Council of Waterdeep in Session 43; deferred through the Garmok's Mine, Sea of Moving Ice, and Luskan arcs.
- Session 52 — Marshal Ulder Ravengard re-tasked the party directly: Varram is moving in the northeast, a target of Rezmir's rank, "just below their main leader." "Not certain what she's doing. But we think if you can go and track her down, that'll be a pretty big blow against the cult."
- Session 53 — confirmed as the official main quest line from Nuts Deep. After roughly a week of downtime standing up the fort, the party marched north.
- Session 54 — Boareskyr Bridge reached (via Triel and Soubar). Findings:
- Varram was here weeks ago — publicly, memorably, and violently: she unmasked and killed yuan-ti spies and is toasted as the hero of Boareskyr Bridge. She left with her entourage toward the Serpent Hills.
- Her trail leaves the road northeast along the Winding Water — a decent-sized group, moving fast. A hastily struck cold camp was found, with one set of dwarf-sized bootprints striding hard northeast — and several prints that press far too deep and end in claws. Not all of her mercenaries are human.
- The yuan-ti are hunting her: spies at the bridge were watching for the dwarf, and a dead yuan-ti tracker on her trail carried her portrait sewn into its flesh. Word of her coming may already be slithering toward the Serpent Hills.
- Four Cult of the Dragon agents at the bridge — armed with an Orb of Dragon's Breath and bound for a Serpent Hills rendezvous ("orders are orders") — were killed on the road by Elturgard paladins the party tipped off. No papers or orders were found on them.
- Session 55 — the pursuit closed hard:
- A dug-up explorer's grave on the trail was rifled only in mask- or helm-sized hiding places, the coin left behind — someone ahead is searching graves for the mask.
- Another of Varram's camps sat against a forgotten shrine: a purple wyrmspeaker's thread and a five-pointed wax observance to Tiamat — the company keeps her rites even on the run.
- Baelgrum scried Varram with the thread: she is a prisoner of the yuan-ti, tied and tortured in a windowless cell, pleading for her life. The yuan-ti and the Wyrmspeaker are not allies.
- Scorched infernal rings at a fresh campsite unmasked her clawed mercenaries as devils — and put the party less than a day behind them.
- The trail ended the session at a ruined town before an ancient mage's tomb — a cold cultist/devil camp at the well, seven fresh shallow graves, and a sealed 40-foot edifice flanked by broken colossi.
What Makes This Urgent:
- Dragon masks are powerful artifacts tied to Tiamat's power
- The Cult needs the masks for their summoning ritual
- Varram's covert search suggests desperation - she fears the consequences of her failure
- The yuan-ti reached her first — she is being tortured now, and whatever she knows is being cut out of her
- Her company is digging for the mask without her, less than a day ahead
Rewards
- The White Dragon Mask - A powerful artifact of Tiamat
- Significant disruption of the Cult of the Dragon's plans
- Potential intelligence from Varram (if captured) about the Cult's operations
- Recognition and support from the Council of Waterdeep
- Removal of a dangerous Wyrmspeaker from the field
