Lady Calera

Lady Calera is a tiefling noble, arts patron, and political figure in Waterdeep — and, beneath the illusion, an erinyes of the Hells (Zarchelia). She is the former owner of the Bagpipes of Zariel's Lament, an infernal artifact she entrusted to Shade through a binding pact.

Background

Lady Calera presents herself to Waterdeep society as a wealthy human noblewoman and patron of the arts. In truth she conceals an infernal nature behind illusion magic; when she finally let the illusion fall away entirely before Deez Nuts, she revealed herself as the erinyes Zarchelia, Erinyes-Inquisitor of the Second Court and a warranted agent of the archdevil Dispater.

She came into possession of the Bagpipes of Zariel's Lament, a powerful infernal relic from Avernus that magnifies bardic magic but curses mortal souls not bound to the Hells. As a being of Infernal Heritage, Calera could wield the bagpipes without suffering the curse.

Role in Campaign

In Session 41 and Session 42, Lady Calera hosted a musicians' gala at her estate in Waterdeep. During the gala, she performed on the Bagpipes of Zariel's Lament, using their power to defuse a heated argument between nobles with a mournful, magical melody.

In a private meeting, Calera dropped her human illusion and revealed her true nature to Shade. She offered the bagpipes to Shade (also a tiefling) to use in the fight against the Cult of the Dragon, in exchange for a binding pact: if Calera ever needs assistance in a future battle or uprising, she will send word and Deez Nuts must come to her aid. This is recorded as the Original Pact.

The pact was struck using what Karma and Keyleth recognized as an infernal contract structure—magically binding and with the weight of a deal with devils.

Calera also identified Lord Valtheran as the likely owner of a Cult of the Dragon ring discovered by Carter the pickpocket, providing crucial intelligence about cult infiltration of Waterdeep's nobility.

The Reckoning in the Hells (Session 49)

When Deez Nuts were killed to the last in Arauthator's lair, they awoke not in death but in a demiplane of the Hells — a throne raised over a river of blood and skulls. Lady Calera let her mortal illusion fall away entirely. She reminded them that dying does not release them from the pact: "I don't think that it's reasonable for you to get out of our deal by dying." With the blessing of the Raven Queen — who also needs the party among the living — Calera offered to resurrect them back into the exact moment of the battle. The archdevil Dispater watched over the bargain from his throne.

The Compact Sealed (Session 50)

In Session 50, Calera — fully in her erinyes form as Zarchelia — sealed the bargain as a Compact of Restoration and Continuance, beneath the Iron Towers of Dis and under warrant of Dispater. Each signer was returned to life at the instant of their death, restored to three-quarters strength with one fresh charge of every power, in exchange for deepening the Original Pact and owing the Proprietor a single covert "Operation" on the Material Plane within a year of her summons — with the promise of a second resurrection should they discharge that service. As the price of being reforged, each character also took up a fiendish pact feat, gaining new infernal power at the cost of a permanent sliver of themselves. She could retrieve every soul save one: Alexios repelled her each time she reached for him by roaring "smite me!", and his soul slipped free of the bargain. In his stead Calera bound a nearby substitute — Balegrum, a dwarf cult-hunter of Goldenfields — and returned the company to the exact instant of the dragon battle. She parted from Keyleth with a flirtatious invitation to "call on me anytime you please."

Current Status

Active in Waterdeep and in the Hells. With the Compact sealed, Deez Nuts are bound to her more tightly than ever — reforged by her bargain and each owing her a covert Operation when she calls. Her infernal nature, and her identity as the erinyes Zarchelia, are no longer hidden from the party.
