Find Varram the White

The Council of Waterdeep has assigned Deez Nuts to locate Varram the White, a Wyrmspeaker of the Cult of the Dragon who has apparently lost the White Dragon Mask. Intelligence from the Harpers indicates that Varram is searching for the mask covertly, trying to conceal its loss from the rest of the Cult. Recovering the White Dragon Mask before Varram does would remove a critical resource from the Cult's ritual to summon Tiamat.

About Varram the White

Varram the White is a dwarven Cult of the Dragon Wyrmspeaker, one of five high-ranking cultists each entrusted with a dragon mask. As Wyrmspeaker of white dragons, Varram wielded the White Dragon Mask—until she lost it, sparking a desperate secret quest to recover it before the cult leadership discovers her failure.

Appearance and Personality: Varram is a dwarf of considerable ambition but questionable competence. Her position as Wyrmspeaker came more from political maneuvering within the cult than from actual strategic brilliance. Now, the loss of her dragon mask has exposed her inadequacy and left her in a precarious position.

The Lost Mask: The White Dragon Mask is one of five ancient artifacts the Cult of the Dragon seeks to unite. Each mask grants its wearer significant power over dragons of that color. Varram's loss of such a crucial artifact represents a catastrophic failure that could cost her not just her position, but her life.

Current Situation: Rather than report her failure to cult leadership (which would likely result in execution), Varram is conducting a covert search for the mask. She's operating with minimal resources, trying to recover the artifact before Severin or the other Wyrmspeakers discover what happened.

At Boareskyr Bridge she has become a local legend: "Varram, the hero of Boareskyr Bridge." Weeks before the party arrived (Session 54), the dwarf in purple robes was drinking in the inn when a hooded Yuan-ti spy approached her table — she stabbed him through the eye without ever seeing his face, her entourage cut down the rest of his clutch outside, and the bodies were staked ten feet high at the town's edge. She then rode northeast with her escort, toward the Serpent Hills. The crossing toasts her name; nobody there knows what she is.

The serpents are hunting her. A yuan-ti tracker found dead on her trail — throat slit — carried a drawing of Varram sewn into secret pockets in its own flesh: round dwarf face, purple robes. The yuan-ti want the Wyrmspeaker by name and face, and the reason is unknown.

Strategic Value: Finding Varram offers multiple advantages:

  • Recover the White Dragon Mask - Preventing the cult from reuniting all five masks
  • Interrogate a Wyrmspeaker - High-level intelligence about cult operations and plans

Recovering the White Dragon Mask would prevent the Cult from using it in their ritual and remove significant power from their arsenal. The Council is uncertain how many dragon masks the Cult needs for the ritual to summon Tiamat, but removing even one should disrupt their plans.

  • Session 52 — Marshal Ulder Ravengard re-tasked the party directly: Varram is moving in the northeast, a target of Rezmir's rank, "just below their main leader." "Not certain what she's doing. But we think if you can go and track her down, that'll be a pretty big blow against the cult."
  • Session 53 — confirmed as the official main quest line from Nuts Deep. After roughly a week of downtime standing up the fort, the party marched north.
  • Session 54Boareskyr Bridge reached (via Triel and Soubar). Findings:
    • Varram was here weeks ago — publicly, memorably, and violently: she unmasked and killed yuan-ti spies and is toasted as the hero of Boareskyr Bridge. She left with her entourage toward the Serpent Hills.
    • Her trail leaves the road northeast along the Winding Water — a decent-sized group, moving fast. A hastily struck cold camp was found, with one set of dwarf-sized bootprints striding hard northeast — and several prints that press far too deep and end in claws. Not all of her mercenaries are human.
    • The yuan-ti are hunting her: spies at the bridge were watching for the dwarf, and a dead yuan-ti tracker on her trail carried her portrait sewn into its flesh. Word of her coming may already be slithering toward the Serpent Hills.
    • Four Cult of the Dragon agents at the bridge — armed with an Orb of Dragon's Breath and bound for a Serpent Hills rendezvous ("orders are orders") — were killed on the road by Elturgard paladins the party tipped off. No papers or orders were found on them.
